Det finns ett flertal studier som fokuserar på CSA-offers upplevelser. Forskningen är dock bristfällig gällande hur nära relationer och den sexuella hälsan upplevs hos de kvinnor med en historia av CSA samt hur samhället kan underlätta för barn, tonåringar och kvinnor i olika kontexter att våga berätta om övergreppen. Kvinnor och barn som utsatts för CSA har visat sig vända känslorna inåt och inte velat söka hjälp. En utebliven eller bristfällig läkandeprocess leder till biopsykosociala konsekvenser som ytterligare kan traumatisera och skada den sexuella hälsan och nära relationer där reviktimisering i form av nya sexuella övergrepp och våld i nära relation är vanligt förekommande hos dessa kvinnor. Stigma, skuld och skam är faktorer som kan förhindra att det utsatta barnet eller kvinnan berättar om CSA-händelsen. Kontextuella faktorer har även visat sig påverka den utsattes benägenhet till att berätta för någon och/eller söka hjälp. Fortsatta studier behöver undersöka hur stigmat kan minska på samhällelig nivå, och detta i sin tur kan minska den skam som offret lever med. Det behövs dessutom mer kunskap kring hur kontextuella faktorer ytterligare kan försvåra läkandeprocessen för utsatta grupper.
