environmental measures gave the
drabanten housing estate in nybro a lift
Attractive stormwater ponds and buildings for refuse sorting have made Drabanten in Nybro both popular and environmentally friendly. The energy saving is estimated at 648 MWh/year, and 104 tonnes fewer of household refuse end up being landfilled annually.
Between 1999 and 2001, the housing company Nybro Bostadsaktiebolag (NBAB) used money from the local investment programme (LIP) to upgrade the Drabanten housing estate. The housing estate has undergone a radical improvement in quality with regard to the outdoor environment. Among other things, ponds have been cre-ated to take stormwater, and buildings for the sorting of waste have been erected.
The project is a good example of environmental investments producing desired results in several areas beyond the purely environmental aspects. The estate today is free of cars, there is a system for sorting refuse that works well, the outdoor envi-ronment has been given a great boost and the stormwater ponds are working well.
PositiVE EnVironmEntaL anD Economic imPacts
• As a result of the action, 104 tonnes less of household waste per year is landfilled. • As a result of the action, 13 kg of potassium is returned to arable land annually. • As a result of the action, 94 kg of phosphorus is returned to arable land annually. • The action has re-used 2,165 tonnes of building material and has dealt with 47,000 m3 of stormwater daily. • Waste management has been adapted to the ecocycle and has been made more energy-efficient. • Less stormwater reaches Lake Linneasjön as all the stormwater is dealt with in the housing estate.

imPLEmEntation
The pipe network for stormwater in the area has been rebuilt so that the storm-water is dealt with locally. The stormThe pipe network for stormwater in the area has been rebuilt so that the storm-water is collected in a newly built pond with a small brook and is then infiltrated into the ground via a reservoir.
Two new buildings have been erected for refuse separation and composting. NBAB installed refuse separating equipment in all apartments to make it easier to separate and compost refuse. NBAB also keeps the buildings for refuse separation fresh and clean, which has made residents more willing to separate their refuse.
The company had had problems with odour and in post-composting and use of the finished compost, and maintenance has been time-consuming. Draining the cleaning the stormwater ponds so that the circulation works has also involved a great deal of work. The ponds otherwise work well.

It is important to create sustainable towns. Developing many different kinds of environmental solutions in an urban district or housing estate allows integrated systems or other complete solutions to be developed. We also acquire “show-cases” for Swedish environmental technology, in which many actors and compa-nies can be involved. Good environmental solutions in an area often also make the whole area more attractive.

There has been a notable increase in lettings on the estate. nybro bostadsaktiebolag has continued to erect waste separation buildings in the remainder of its apartment stock. nbAb has also continued to upgrade the outdoor environment in several places following the project. Several municipal housing companies have come to drabanten on study visits.
