Kungsör’s riparian meadows
attract visitors
By restoring enclosed pastures and wetland meadows, Kungsör has created a destina-tion for excursions that attracts visits by both humans and birds.
The successful restoration of enclosed pastures and wetland meadows in the municipality of Kungsör has led to increased biodiversity. The action taken has additionally raised interest in the natural and cultivated landscape, improved recreational opportunities, created an attractive residential environment and attracted visitors to the municipality. With support from the Local Invest-ment Programme (LIP), 46 ha of enclosed pastures and wetland meadows were restored. Characteristic species such as yellow flag and ragged robin have increased on the wetland meadows. Lapwing, greylag and yellow wagtail breed in the area, and corncrake use the riparian meadows as a resting site.

imPLEmEntation
The restored pastures and meadows are within walking distance of the town of Kungsör. The aim was to create an attractive residential environment, improve opportunities for excursions and recreation and develop and preserve landscape amenities. Today new homes have been built and the restored environments attract people to both visit and settle in the town.
The municipality has focused on highlighting history through the natural and cultural amenities of the traditionally managed pastures and meadows. A guide to the cultivated landscape has been produced and activities are organ-ised for school classes and groups. A bird-watching tower has been constructed and nature and culture guides have been trained. A conference facility has gained a fine view across the grazed meadows and access to a beautiful area for ram-bling. The restoration has attracted interest in other municipalities.

When the wetland meadow at Kungsudden was newly restored, there was a clear, positive impact on flora and fauna, but today the grazing pressure is a little low and mowing is limited. The mowed acreage and the grazing pressure should increase for the positive effect to persist and the leaching of nutrients to decrease. The pastures and meadows would also benefit from being mechani-cally cultivated again, but these measures are a matter of available resources.
The traditionally managed pastures and meadows are the pride of the munici-pality, and various activities are planned in the area. Cooperation to preserve diversity has been initiated in cooperation with the county administrative board and landowners.

The natural landscape, natural resources and biodiversity have to be conserved and used in a sustai-nable way, for instance by restoring enclosed pastures, wetland meadows and other valuable habitats. having access to and being able to spend time in nature is important to everyone. In the long term this can lead to greater environmental involvement.
The measure has increased biodiversity and created an attractive place to visit and a popular residen-tial environment. The public’s knowledge of the area’s natural and cultural history and the significance of grazing and mowing for wealth of species has increased.
