I am to prepare a brief memo containing a description of the methods. Mr McLaughlin is District Engr. and Mr Lohman is Regional Engr. of the USGS groundwater branch. Messrs Young, Mitchell and Johnson of Canada in today to talk about winter concreting. Copies of the paper by Tuthill, Glover, Spencer and Bierce were given to them. They enclose work with thin walls and work inside the enclosure. The effect of forms on massive work has been determined by thermometers. They find that 1” these [illegible] of foam lumber were protect to 15 degrees [Fahrenheit] below zero if concrete is placed at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They consider 50 degrees [Fahrenheit] for 2 days as adequate curing. REG

Mr McClellan says the Bureau can not send me to Los Angeles as requested by Prof. Duke to preside at the meeting on earthquake motion. REG 4/15/52

Suggested to Nalder that we proceed with preparation of earthquake intensity maps based on present Bureau epicenter maps. He says funds would have to be let up especially for this activity. REG

Talked to Simonds about the possibility of getting the epicenter maps worked on to provide isoseismal lines conforming to the intensity records. REG

Conference on Oahe pump test analyses among Geo La Rocque (USGS). Maierhofer, Yorger, Tapp, Von Seggern, RJ Winger Jr, McDonald. Pump tests 1, 3, 8 and 9 were found to yield values of Kandk’ which

were in agreement. Mr La Rocque pointed out a partial water-table condition in test 2. Test 4 was not performed under water table conditions. Mr La Rocque asked for a recheck of Test 5 data to account for the effect of Boundaries and also requested computations for test No 7. Test no 6 was supplied by two aquifers. REG 5/19/52

Dudgeon gave direction for use of funds. Donovan outlined the search of literature. The process proposed for electromagnetic separation was discussed in detail. Some questions were raised but no positive statements were made that the process would not work. REG

Talked to Bates about water temperatures at Grand Lake, Mary’s Lake, Estes Lake and outlet of Estes Lake. He will collect what temperatures they have and attempt to collect other readings if possible (he thinks there is no water in the Adams tunnel now). Summer water temperatures are needed also. Bates is to request temp crafure data from the personnel at Estes Park Power Plant. He wants a form for requesting new data. REG 7/1/52

Conference on demineralization. Hosticka, Merlenz, Green, Kunas, Tirablin, Glover, Burnett, Donovan present. Questions of equipment, space, safety, paver outlets, transportation etc discussed. Hosticka suggested a new pole arrangement geometry for his scheme.

Glover suggested a synchronous motor operated valve and an incomplete or interrupted 3 phase rotating field to nullify the effect of the field flux cutting the discard line. REG

Talked with Mr Neve about possible operation of Horsetooth feeder canal next winter. Discussed possibility of installing flash-board grooves on the Big Thompson Diversion Structure. Neve says flashboard grooves have been provided (but were not in use at the time of the ice trouble last winter). Flashboards could be used to provide a pool which would keep Frazil ice out of the Dilly tunnel. REG Tuesday, July 8, 1952

REG A proposed method for sweetening the water in the Shadehill Reservoir was described to K Green and W Moran this morning. The process involves spreading the water in a thin stream over the bunks of the reservoir and the frozen surface of the lake. The unfrozen residue carries away the salts and is

discarded. REG

Freezing experiment made today. Ice from unstirred specimen went from about 150 to 3100 parts per million original solution 1180 ppm. About ¾ of this specimen frozen. Stirred specimens ran about 165 to 265 (about) ppm in the ice. About half of their specimen frozen. In both the stirred specimens the ice was of good quality for irrigation. REG

Conference on demineralization. Price, Moran, Glover, Daum, Green, Donovan, Burnett,Timblin, Monfore present. Electromagnetic, Electrostatic and freezing methods discussed. Not much done on electromagnetic during month but ability of electromagnetic field to drive ions had been demonstrated.

Donovan had been working on the bibliography and could not make progress on electrostatic process. Freezing experiments look promising. Separation had been demonstrated. REG 9/30/52

Freezing of sample of Shadehill water (synthetic) completed today. Ice looks best of any cylinder frozen this far. REG

Conference in Mr McClellan’s office in regard to rental of IBM Machines to reduce strain meter data and to do other computations. Machines will cost about $25000 per year and require an extra man. Strain meter computations will be the bulk of the work for the first year. All data including Hoover is expected to be brought up to date.
