A biomass-fired district heating plant was built in Borensberg outside Motala with support from LIP grants. The plant replaced oil and electricity. As a result of the project, carbon dioxide emissions from Borensberg decreased by 2 000 tonnes/year.

Borensberg, outside Motala, was previously heated mainly by electricity and oil. The Municipality of Motala received grants from the Local Investment Programme (LIP) to replace this heating with district heating produced from biomass. The local residents consequently gained access to a convenient, inexpensive and sustainable heating alternative. The action was implemented in 2002 and 2003.

PositiVE EnVironmEntaL anD Economic imPacts

• Carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 2 000 tonnes/year.

• The project entailed a switch from electricity to renewable energy of 2.2 GWh/year, as well as a switch from domestic heating oil to renewable energy amounting to 865 m3/year.

• Emissions of sulphur dioxide decreased by 910 kg/year.

• Transportation of oil to customers has decreased, as have leakages and oil spills. • Most customers have gained cheaper heating.

imPLEmEntation

A biomass-fired heating plant and a distribution network were built in Borensberg in the municipality of Motala as a result of the action. The district heating plant con-sists of a biomass boiler fired by woodchips and a peak and reserve boiler burning low-sulphur oil. The district heating network was expanded to the larger properties in Borensberg and to a number of single-family houses. The type of boiler used was new to Tekniska Verken, which directed the project. The boiler could not be run as planned during the summer when the load is low, but this problem was eliminated by installing a new cooler.

The project became substantially more expensive than planned because Tekniska Verken chose to build a biomass boiler that can be fired by several fuel fractions. The district heating network also became more expensive because more single-family houses than expected joined the network.

The network is being continuously expanded, and the environmental gains are increasing as more customers are connected to district heating. The ash is used as a soil improver.

PotEntiaL anD fUtUrE BEnEfit

Biomass fuels replacing fossil fuels has substantial positive climatic effects. This is both financially advantageous and increases the environmental benefit of using biomass fuels that would otherwise be a waste fraction and that cannot naturally be used for anything else, such as digestion. District heating systems reduce air pollution locally, make it possible to utilise waste heat from other activities and produce combined heat and power. As urbanisation increases globally, the conditions for expanding district heating are improving.

As a result of the district heating project in borensberg, Tekniska Verken went from being a local player in Linköping to becoming a regional player. Tekniska Verken has since been involved in many district heating projects, several of which have meant utilising industrial waste heat or industrial waste products, for example in Skärblacka and Kisa.

ninety per cent of the biomass fuel for borensberg comes from local suppliers. FOr FUrTher InFOrMATIOn
