Välle broar – arena for applied research
Välle Broar is a local program by the municipality of Växjö to promote increased use of timber in construction. During a 10-15 year period approximately 1000 apartments will be build and, in addition, a total of about 30 000 m2 for commerce and offi ces. All construction within Välle Broar will be realised using timber and timber-based products as the main load-bearing material. Timber construction will be used at a large scale with buildings of up to at least eight storeys. Researchers from Växjö University and from SP Trätek are taking part in several research projects, documenting the birth and growth of the Modern Wooden City.

Acoustics and vibrations
The fi gure below shows the fl oor structure used at Limnologen. By separating the fl oor and the ceiling, good sound insulation is achieved. The fl oor thickness is also larger than for traditional techniques. For walls that separate apartments a classical dou-ble wall is used. At junctions cuts are made in the fl oor structure in order to separate the partitions as much as possible. A fl oa-ting fl oor, not shown in the fi gure below, is placed on top of the CLT-slab. The acoustic performance of the structure at Limnolo-gen is subject to several investigations including measurements of vibrations and airborne sound reduction.

Växjö, Sweden Välle broar is a new part of Växjö,
south of the city centre.
Limnologen in Växjö, Sweden (4 buildings with totally 134 apartments) is the fi rst building project being realised within the Välle Broar program. At Limnologen seven of the eight sto-reys are made of wood – load bearing parts being made mainly
using cross-laminated timber (CLT). The main eye-catcher at the building site is probably the large tent used to ensure dry wor-king conditions (see middle picture below).
