FOR THE COMPLETE SOLUTION OF A PRACTICAL
SUGAR BEET PULLER AND TOPPER
WHICH SHALL FILL THE SPECIFICATIONS HEREINAFTERGIVEN, TO THE ENTIRE SATISFACTION OF
THE COMMITTEE OF JUDGES
APPOINTED BY THE GREAT WESTERN SUGAR COMPANY FOR THE PURPOSE OF ADJUDGING THE INVENTIONS AND
DESIGNS OF BEET PULLERS AND TOPPERS SUBMITTED IN THIS COMPETITION AND A WARDING THE PRIZE THEREFOR
The Aforesaid Prize is Offered Subject to the
Following Conditions:
1. All communications of the contestants are to be directed to The Great Western Sugar Company, Denver, Colorado.
2. All communications of contestants are to be written in English and must contain a specific description of the Puller and Topper and be accompanied by the necessary sketches or drawings thereof.
3. Contestants may use their own name or an assumed name. When an assumed name is given, the,contestant shall enclose his own name and address in a sealed envelope which shall accompany the other papers submitted. This envelope will be opened only in case of awarding the prize to such contestant.
4. The said prize is offered for a practical Beet Puller and Topper which shall fill the required specifications to the complete satisfaction of the said Committee of Judges appointed by The Great Western Sugar Company. The Company does not offer or assume to award this prize for the best invention of a Beet Puller and Topper submitted in this competition, when, in the opinion of the said Committee of Judges, no practical Beet Puller and Topper has been submitted in such competition, but said prize is offered and will be awarded only upon the invention or design and complete solution of a Beet Puller and Topper which shall meet said specifications to the complete satisfaction of said Committee of J,1dges, and shall be, in the opinion of said Committee, a practical, successful working machiiie for the purposes designated, under said conditions and specifications here named.
5. This offer may be in force until the first day of March, 1915; provided, however, that the Company reserves the right to award said prize at any time prior to said first day of March, 1915, when a Beet Puller and Topper has been designed and demonstrated to the full satisfaction of said Committee of Judges to meet the requirements herein specified, and by said Committee accepted, in which event the said prize is due and payable as soon as such Beet Puller and Topper has been so demonstrated to and accepted by the said Committee of Judges, and thereupon this o{fer of said prize and all competition hereunder shall cease and end and no further or other award or prize hereunder will be made or given. 6. If two or more contestants shall fulfill all the required conditions and specifications hereof, the Committee of Judges, at their option and election and at their sole discretion, shall give the prize to the one who, in their opinion, shall furnish the best solution for a working machine for the purposes designated; or the Committee of Judges may divide equally the said prize between the successful contestants.
7. A contestant will be required to demonstrate his machine or apparatus at such times and places as the Committee of Judges may require. Such trials may be conducted by the judges or their authorized representatives, and may be carried on throughout the harvest season, in order to determine whether the said apparatus or machine will work
satisfactorily and successfully under changed soil and weather conditions, and is practical for the purposes required. The contestant shall furnish his apparatus or machine when required in making such trials, without cost or expense to the Company for the use of such apparatus or machine in such trials, or the time given by the contestant in demonstrating his machine.
8. The Committee of Judges shall, in their discretion, determine whether they desire to examine a certain apparatus or machine at all, and if so, when, and how often, how long, and where such trial or trials are to be made.
9. Where more than one party is interested in the machine winning the prize, the whole amount of the prize awarded will be made payable jointly to the parties so interested
10. This contest is open to the general public, including the employes of The Great Western Sugar Company, and all other sugar companies.
11. Any decision, ruling or award of the Committee of Judges made hereunder is final and conclusive upon all contestants entering this competition, and there shall be no appeal or right of action by any contestant for the purpose of contesting, avoiding, or review-ing any such decision, rulreview-ing or award of the judges.
12. The Great Western Sugar Company by awarding the aforesaid prize hereunder, will acquire no interest in the invention, design or machine of the successful contestant herein: provided, however, that the Company, as a condition precedent to the awardi~ of said prize, may require the successful contestant or contestants to furnish bond to the Company, with satisfactory surety, in an amount not to exceed the amount of the prize hereby offered, conditioned upon the sale to the public at the prices specified in paragraph 7
of the specifications hereinafter set forth, of the machine so awarded the prize hereunder.
The Beet Puller and Topper Must Conform to and
Meet the Following Specifications:
1. The motive power required for different soil and weather conditions must not be excessive, that is, not to exceed four horses per beet row if animal power is used.
2. The device must pull and top all the beets and separate beets and tops and leave beets and tops convenient to load. It is especially understood that the work may be done by two machines of which one does the topping, the other one the pulling, or vice versa, although a combined machine is preferred. The pulling and topping must be done in a satisfactory manner.
3. The steering and turning of the machine or machines must be easy and practical. The Beet Puller and Topper must be adjustable for rows spaced from 16 to 20 inches apart. 4. The operation must be such that damage to the beets or tops will be avoided as much as possible.
5. The machines must fulfill the above conditions regardless of the size of either beets or foliage, and be practical in the varying types of beet lands.
6. The machines must be durable and reasonably simple, and the different parts easily replaced.
7. The selling price of the machine or machines to the public by the local dealer, _
whether combined or otherwise, shall not exceed $300.00 if the motive power is animal power, and shall not exceed $500.00 if self-propelled.
8. The Committee of Judges shall have the right to alter, modify, or set aside the above specifications, in their discretion.
