Biological data: age, weight, length, fat percentage,

condition

1)

Figures: Spatial visualisation of geometric mean concentrations of contaminants in

marine biota at the different sampling sites

(time period indicated at the top of the figure,

mostly last 3 years);

Circles: geometric mean concentrations symbolised by the size and colour of the circles; Legend to

the right: for all compounds with more than five sampling sites: concentration range is given for the

5

th

, 25

th

, 50

th

, 75

th

and 95

th

percentiles for each compound; for five or less sampling sites: the unique

values are shown; values given in two significant digits; Red border around a circle: geometric

mean concentration exceeds the threshold. If the threshold is expressed in a different unit than the

concentration given in the figure, the threshold is recalculated and adjusted to be comparable with the

presented data. The recalculation is based on the mean value (over the entire time series) for e.g. lw%

lipid weight, or dw% dry weight in percent for each site.

2)

Figures: Time trends of contaminants in marine biota for different sampling sites

and species over the entire sampling period;

Y-axis units: ww: wet weight; dw: dry weight; lw: lipid weight;

Statistical parameters (in the upper left for the log-linear trend over the entire time series): Slope:

annual percentage change with the 95 % confidence interval in brackets, R²: coefficient of

determination; p: probability value, y(YYYY): predicted concentration for the last sampling year

based on the smoother line with the 95 % confidence interval in brackets);

Data: Small points represent the measured concentration in an individual or a pooled sample (i.e. one

point equals one observation); Big circular points are annual geometric mean values; Error bars

(around the geometric mean) represent the 95 % confidence interval; Red crosses (on top of the

geometric mean) indicate statistical outliers, which are though included into the time trend analysis;

Asterisks (in the lower bottom) indicate that at least one observation exceeds the range presented in

the figure and is therefore not shown, but included into the time trend analysis; Bar charts (in grey)

indicate that all values are below the limit of quantification (LOQ); sample concentrations below the

LOQ are included into the time trend analysis as the LOQ value divided by the square root of two.

Trend lines: Log-linear trend line for the entire time series and/or the last 10 years. A smoother line is

shown for the entire time series if the degree of explained variation is significantly higher compared to

the log-linear trend for the same time period. Trend lines are only shown when significant (p<0.05 in

red) or close to significant (p<0.1 in blue).

Threshold: recalculated threshold (expressed in the same unit as the time series data) for substances

where the existing recommended value is expressed in a different unit than the presented data in the

figure. The adjustment is done based on the mean value (for the entire time series at each site) of the

variable used for the recalculation (e.g. lw% lipid weight in percent, dw% dry weight in percent);

Green area: indicates the concentration range below the threshold; Blue area: if two different

thresholds exists, the blue area indicates the threshold with the lower value;

3)

Tables: Statistical summary of the time trends of contaminants in marine biota for

different sampling sites and species

(for each substance following the last figure)
