Abstract Obesity increases rapidly in the western world. Approximately 1.6 billion people suffering from overweight and 400 million of these are suffering from morbid obesity. Because of this rapidly increase WHO has defined overweight as an epidemic. Overweight is a large problem and a threat to public health, because of the high risk for other

diseases. In spite of powerful contribution, overweight still increases among the population. The aim of the study was to describe

determining factors at weight loss among overweight adults. The study was performed as a literature study. Four categories appeared in the result: motivation, support, goals and obstacles. All factors had an important influence at weight loss. Motivation was the strongest factor, support and weight loss goals were also important. The factor that effected weight loss negatively was obstacles. Despite extensive research there is still a lack of knowledge, for example about the association between overweight and stress.
