General evaluation

The dostoral thesis of Master of Science Przemyslaw Ceynowa entitled "Modification of diamond nanopowders by the

MW

PACVD rotary reactor chamber" consists of 7 chapters, bibliography and

list of

appendices. The entire thesis occupies

a total of

118 pages. The dissertation has extensive, and well-introducing into the subjec! literature review based on 91

carefully

selected bibliographical positions.

The scientific output of the PhD

student

(according to the documents supplied) includes 18 items out of

which2

are publications on a

regular magazines, others are included in the conference proceedings.

Purpose and the thesis of work has been formulated clearly, According to the reviewer the main advantages of work includo:

Design and construction of innovative apparatus for the modification of powders using the

MW

PACVD method

-

Developnrent of a methodology of modification of powders

-

Confirmation of the effrciency of the modification in biological tests

The work is an interesting approach to the current and actual subject of modification and

functionalization

of

nanomaterials.

The

proposed

by the PhD

student approach

to

the modification of diamond powders is in line with the cun'ent trend of research and brings to

it

new cognitive elements, The PhD thesis primarily has

a

construetion character where the emphasis

is on the

development, construction and implementation

of the

equipment for modification of powders using MW PACVD method, In this part the graduate student showed a large engineering experience

in

designing and building the apparatus, successfully using his own proprietary solutions. The effectiveness of the method used for the modification was also confirned

in

the comparative biological research, which also helped

to

achieve the goal

of

work and proving the thesis,

Other notes:

Thecandidate at the doctor degree also did not escape some elTols and simplifications noted by the reviewer. The most important remarks include:

Incomplete approach to the material analysis of powders. The study failed to link the changes occurring on the rnodified materials with the biological effects.

The nomenclature used for the tested szunples of powders is not clear. In the case

of

biological and FTIR tests samples are labeled as ND-0,

ND

1, ND-2, while for SEM studies as PD, PDM,

PDM

30, PDM_60. Other encountered descriptions include:

ND-0"DanileRko", ND- 1 "Gdafl sk", ND-2"Koszalin".

In fig. 31 is shown the

HRTEM

of one of the tested powders manufactured using the detonation method, which one is that and what is the scale?

In table 5 the presented surface area of powder is equal to 300

-

400 m2lg, whereas

based on the SEM examinations

it

was determined that it is equal to 285,4

m2/kg, How, basing on the SEM picture, it was possible to determine this parameter with such a big accuracy?

Final evaluation

All

comments mentioned above are debatable and do not diminish the positive opinion of the reviewer about the scientific level of the disserlation,

Summarizing,

should be claimed that the dissertation

from

the materials science field

of Master of Science Przemuslaw Ceynowa: ,,Modification of

with

the terms established

in

the titles and degrees law.
