Örebro StudieS in Medicine 27 2009 issn 1652-4063 isbn 978-91-7668-649-2Peter Elfström (date of birth 1974) recieved a M.D. degree in 2001 from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and did his internship at Danderyds hospital in Stock-holm. He started working at the Pediatric department at Örebro University Hospital in 2003 and is currently finishing his training as a pediatrician. The research for his doctorial thesis on associated disorders in celiac disease was started in 2004 under the tutorship of As-sociate Professor Jonas F Ludvigsson.
Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by dietary gluten. It is a common disease and affects about 1% of the general population. Celiac disease has increasingly become considered as a multi-organ disorder and has been linked to a number of diseases including autoim-mune disorders. This doctorial thesis explores the risk of possible associated disorders in celiac disease through Swedish population-based registers. The findings indicate that celiac disease is associated with an increased risk of liver disease, Addison’s disease, thyroid disease and lymphoma. However, no association was found between celiac disease and autoimmune heart disease or leukemia.
