ÖREBRO STUDIES IN MEDIcINE 58Mårten Vidlund was born in Stockholm in 1968. He studied Medicine at Uppsala University 1989-1995. He started his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Öre-bro University Hospital in 1997 and became specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2002. Under the tutorship of Professor Rolf Svedjeholm at Linköping University Hospital, he started his research work in 2005.
We investigated if intravenous glutamate infusion given in association with coronary surgery can reduce mortality, myocardial injury and postoperative heart failure. Based on encouraging clinical experience the GLUTAMICS-trial was initiated. A total of 861 patients operated for acute coronary syndrome were randomized to blinded intravenous infusion of glutamate or saline. Significant secondary outcome differences suggest a beneficial effect of glutamate on post-ischemic myocardial recovery. Intra-venous glutamate infusion could provide an important way of promoting myocardial recovery after ischemic injury.
