REGIONAL RATHER THAN GLOBAL
Make the factory a part of the region
Before the factory was a protected area and separated from the surroundings and the local region, Coca Cola was the typical multinational actor in Paraguay, and didn´t interact with the surrounding agricultural landsape.
This factory will be the nave of a business which has a radius of 60 km and will be the center in this region. It´s important to be a part of the region and a center for the business and farming here.
The landscape
The crop is the heart of the business and when approaching the site it will be like approcahing a Wine chateau in France where the wine stocks grows just outside the windows sur- rounding the whole site. This is a way of physically integrat- ing the factory in the landscape and region.
Stevia Reubadium
Is a perennial plant, with five-year cycles and its origins in Paraguay. It has been used by the local Guarni Indians since time immemorial.
Planted in April and have three crops a year. October, December and April.
Harvested in rows 50-60 cm apart
7. Pick up
points One of the eight pick up points where farmers leave their dried leaves in 5 kg big bags. The leaves are dried from 70% moisture to about 7% in the fields and separated from the trunk.
The leaves are weighed and packed into bales the farmers get $ 1.20 per kg. They will earn abot thrice from the normal minimum wage.
8. Dry bales , The dried leaves are pressed and packed to 50 kg bales in the pick up station. The meassures are, 38x60x20 cm.
300 bales are loaded on trucks and transportet to the refinery.
5. The processed cuttings are delivered to farmers. They now have roots and are only to put into the ground. A farmer needs 50 000 to 0.5 hectares, which is about 10 per sqm.
1. Mother
plants 20 hectares of mother plantation approxi- mately 80 000 plants per hectare. From these are cuttings taken from January to June.
A mother plant provides about 100 cuttings a year.
They are planted in 60 cm wide rows, and the crop is about 40 cm high.
3. Green house The cuttings are placed in a greenhouse in cassettes with plastic sleeves. This takes place from January to June. The whole plant organisation needs about 10 000 square meter green- house.
4. Shaded area
After six weeks in greenhouse the plant is moved to a shaded area outdoors for hardening for 2 weeks. This surface is 20.

2. The cuttings
are harvested once a week, a cutting is a piece of leave from the mother plant
6. Farmers plant the cuttings between March and June, it´s a labour intensive crop and the whole family is involved in the work, it gives three crops a year, October, December and April.

9. In the storage , the dried leaves are unloaded and stored for up to 6 months.
They should be stored dry and dark.
10. Refining The factory rafines the dried leaves through a number of stages, (see diagram) to the finished product which is a white sugar-like powder for use in food and beverage industry, which is then packed into plastic bags and distributed.
11. The new
sweetener is 300 times sweeter as normal sugar. It is a natural product with no calories whichmakes it good for diabetics.
Real Stevia is also good for the environment unlike artificial sweeteners as aspartam and sucralos.
