University of Wyoming A.C.T. Student

Opinion Survey: Laramie Campus

In the spring of 2006, the Dean of Arts & Sciences (A&S) at the University of Wyoming commissioned the

Wyoming Survey & Analysis Center (WYSAC) and more specifically its Survey Research Center (SRC) for data

entry and analysis on a two-part survey of student opinions at UW. This document presents the results from

the part of the survey containing questions that were also asked nationwide by American College Testing (AC1) .

1. Methods

The questionnaire, designed by ACT, has been used at UW in the spring of even-numbered years for some time.

The SRC played no role in questionnaire design, but in 2006 as in 2004 did assist the A&S Dean's office with

the logistics of survey administration. Respondents were those students agreeing to participate, from a sampling

of spring semester classes taught at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, plus additional classes in the Outreach School. All

students in attendance on April

5th'

received two questionnaires, including a survey specific to UW and either

the ACT or another national form.

During May and June, 2006, SRC personnel entered the data from the ACT questionnaires using specialized

scanning software for that purpose to minimized data entry error and procedures for quality control. There

were 636 respondents from the Laramie campus respondents. Simple random samples of that size would yield

margins of error of about+/- 4 percentage points, with

95°/o

confidence. However, the cluster design used

(sampling entire classes) produces larger margins of error that cannot be precisely calculated from the

information available to the SRC.

2. Findings

2.1. Background Information

Over the last 8 years, the age distribution of students at the University of Wyoming seems to have been

relatively stable. Since 1998 the university has seen some increase in enrollment for the 19 to 22 years

old age group.

The majority (roughly 80°/o)

of students enter the University of Wyoming to pursue a bachelor's degree,

a trend which has remained relatively stable since 2000. Since 1998, there has been a small but steady

decrease of students pursing graduate degrees.

Nearly half of the students surveyed do not work or work only occasional jobs. This lack of

employment while in school is a growing trend. There are fewer students working between 11

to 20

hours than in previous surveys. However, the percentage of students who work more than 21

hours has

remained fairly steady. (See Part One, Section I., H.)

There is a steady decrease from 2000 to the present in the number of in-state students and an increase in

the number of out-of-state students. (See Part One, Section I.,

J.)

2.2. College Services

Satisfaction with college services

More than 7 5% of students report to be satisfied with the following college services:

Recreational and intramural programs and services; Library facilities and services;

College-sponsored social activities; Cultural programs; Credit-by-examination (PEP, CLEP, etc.);

Computer services; and College mass transit services. (See Part One, Section II, Sb, 6b, 14b, 15b,

17b, 19b, 20b.)

Highest levels of satisfaction are reported with Library facilities and services, followed by

Recreation and intramural programs and services, and Computer Services.

Less than 50%

of students report to be satisfied with the following college services.

Veterans services; Day care services; and Parking facilities and services. (See Part One, Section

II, 21 b, 22b, 23b.)

As shown in Figure 9 ., students remain least satisfied with Parking facilities and services on

campus. It is worth noting however, that perceptions are improving--the number of "very

dissatisfied" reached its lowest rate to date of 38°/o, and the overall dissatisfaction is down to

65°/o from previous rates of near 80°/o. Also notable is, that this is accompanied by an increase

in the general satisfaction with the college mass transit services.

Mssing values not graphed (always less than 4%)

The college services that changed the most from 2004 to 2006 are the following.

Satisfaction with Library facilities and services gained over 22 percentage points.

Student health insurance program is up more than 1 7 percentage points.

Satisfaction with Career planning service jumped up by 15 percentage points.

The number of students who are "dissatisfied" with parking has decreased by 13 percentage points.

Students who are "very satisfied" with the Credit by examination service is up 11 percentage points.

Satisfaction with Job placement services scored almost 10 percentage points higher.

(15)

WYSAC, University of Wyoming U.W. A.C.T. Student Opinion Survey 2006 (Laramie Campus) 11

2.3. College Environment

While there continues to be very few students who are "very satisfied" with the "student voice in college

policies," they have grown from

1.6°/o

in

2002

to

4. 7°/o

in

2006.

Likewise the number of "satisfied"

students reaches a new high of

24.4°/o

this year. (See Part One, Section III,

16.)

There is growing satisfaction with the "purpose for which student activity fees are used" .(See Part One,

Section III,

20.)

Students are more "dissatisfied" this year than in past surveys with the classroom facilities, and the

number of "satisfied" students reached a new low. (See Part One, Section III,

22.)

This is likely to be

associated with the fact that the classroom building is currently being renovated and classrooms

availability has been tight this year. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that "laboratory facilities,"

(which are not located in the classroom building) ratings remain within one percentage point of their

2004

ratings in

all

categories.

The "availability of the courses you want at times you want to take them" received less favorable ratings

than in

2004.

Again, this is likely due to the scheduling difficulties presented by the renovations of the

classroom building. (See Part One, Section III, 31.)

Over

87°/o

of the students continue to be either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the Student Union,

which is consistent with the

2004

ratings and higher than the ratings in

2002

and

2000.

(See Part One,

Section III,

26.)

Fewer students are "satisfied" with the General registration procedures this year than in

2004.

The

number of students who are "dissatisfied" with registration procedures reached new heights this year.

(See Part One, Section III, 30.)

Since

2002

there has been an increase of almost 9 percentage points in those who report to be "very

satisfied" with "this college in general." (See Part One, Section III,

42.)
