Parenthood

’I would like to have more time to be involved’, says one of the mothers in the present thesis. Despite the fact that she takes care of the children’s laundry, prepares dinner for her children, and helps them with their home-work, she still wants to spend more time with her children.

This ethnographic study explores how eight Swedish middle-class couples understand and form their parenthood in everyday life. It contributes to research on working families through discussing the gendered practices of family life and the expectations of ideal parents. The study illuminates how a cultural norm of involved parenthood is constructed and negotiated in relation to the parents’ engagement in childcare and their children’s education.
