The Public Access Catalog

CARL System's Public Access Catalog (PAC) is based on simplicity and flexibility.

It's powerlul, but easy to use. The design of the Public Access Catalog encourages the user to explore further.

PAC features:

• WORD, NAME and BROWSE Searching presented in natural language

• Boolean Capability

• Sophisticated Searching Techniques such as automatic threading, search history and search edit

• Customized Help Screens to insure that the user always has additional guidance a keystroke away. "Quick Search", for the user who wishes to by-pass menu prompting.

• Format, Media, and Date qualification.

With the same searching strategies employed in the library catalogs, CARL System PAC users can access a variety of other types of databases. Among them ...

• UnCover, the article access and delivery database allows users of the online catalog to search the contents of 10,000 journal titles, and find citations for over a million articles, a truly "user-driven" current awareness service.

• Commercial databases such as lAC's

CARL offers access to the following groups of databases: Trade & Industry Index and Magazine Index, the H.W. Wilson indexes, Groliers Academic American encyclo- pedia, ERIC, and Choice book reviews.

Circulation

CARL System Circulation provides support for some of the nation's largest circulating libraries, with more than 750,000 borrowers and 8 million annual transactions.

Circulation Features:

• Charge: controls circulation of library material, by linking charged materials to individual patrons.

• Return: breaks the link between material and patron. Checks for overdue status and calculates penalties according to library parameters.

• Renew: allows renewal of charged items using library-supplied parameters.

• Patron Inquiry: allows online examination of patron records, includ- ing information about transactions and fines.

• Conversion: allows the linking of item specific information to the bibliographic record.

Reserve

An important subsystem of Circulation, Reserve allows libraries to establish a special circulation collection of high-demand items. Reserve supports all the functions of circulation with these additional capabilities:

• Loan periods can be set for hours and minutes

• Reserve lists can be accessed by course and professor name.

Reports

The CARL System generates reports and notices, customized to meet the needs of the individual library.

Acquisitions

The CARL System Acquisitions Subsystem fills the needs of those who manage the order process and those who manage the collection.

Features:

• Full integration to PAC. New orders can be displayed in the online catalog from the moment they are created and patron holds can be placed on them.

• Automatic duplicate checking. The System will check for duplication within the acquisitions files and the biblio- graphic files.

• Full claim and cancel capabilities.

• Defaults for ordering, receiving and reports.

• A wide variety of status codes for orders, including Desiderata, Holds, and Approvals, plus others which can be defined to suit library needs.

• Support for multiple units within orders.

• Inquiry only access for Collection Development. The System allows staff to create Approval, Hold, Desiderata and Request-for-Quote records, which are available for review and consultation, but which are not available in the PAC until an order decision has been made.

Acquisitions is integrated with Serials Control, which allows the two modules to share vendor, fund, and payment files.

Serials Access and Control

The CARL System Serials Access and Control module offers the full range of functions necessary to manage journal collections. Furthermore, its unique design ties current issues to related Public Access Catalog records and to actual journal contents.

• Spinning checkin grids, copies the last year's receipt pattern to the next year, an improvement on the guess- work approaches often used.

The Serials Access and Control system interfaces with machine-read- able files of vendors such as OCLC, Faxon, Ebsco, and Baker & Taylor.

Bindery records have been created from the machine readable manage-

Bibliographic Maintenance

The CARL Systems Bibliographic Maintenance module gives each library editorial control of its database.

Features

• Catalogers' workstation: combining CARL System software and 286 PC-compati- ble microcomputers, the workstation uses Microsoft Windows (tm) 3.0 and is designed to interface with cataloging utilities.

• ALA extended character set fully supported on pc-compatible machines with CARL Systems software

• All MARC formats fully supported, with error checks and online help messages

• Indexing!deindexing occurs dynamically and changes to records are made in real time.
