The Audi A1, the Audi A1 Sportback and the Audi A1 quattro

The A1, Audi’s most compact model, unites all of the strengths of the brand – a progressive design, uncompromising quality and groundbreaking efficiency – in a space measuring 3.95 meters (12.96 ft) in length. The three-door compact model with the four rings is dynamic and high-quality, emotion-packed and individual. Its powerful engines and the agile chassis make it the sportiest car in the segment.

Launched on the market in 2010, the A1 is so successful that Audi has twice raised its annual unit sales target.

Body and interior

The cutting-edge design with the continuous shoulder line integrates the Audi A1 into the large model family. The front end with the dominating single-frame grille, the side line with the distinctive roof arch, the coupé-like C-pillars and the large wheel arches are among its defining style elements. The hood and the rear hatch wrap around the body. Audi offers optional xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights. The tail lights are already three- dimensionally styled in the base model and are unmistakable, day or night.

High- and ultra high-strength steels comprise two-thirds of the compact model’s body. The strongest of these are the hot-shaped steels, which draw their

extremely high tensile strength from a dramatic temperature increase during the shaping process. Hot-shaped steels are used primarily within the passenger cell.

They provide the basis for the precise, sporty handling, the good comfort, the quiet interior, the excellent passive safety and the low base weight.

The interior of the Audi A1 is spacious, bright and airy. The instrument panel bears hints of an airplane wing; its four round air vents are reminiscent of jet engines. The clean, clear controls are every bit a classic Audi strength as is the superior workmanship. Many lovingly designed details underscore the premium character of the A1.

Drivetrain

The Audi A1 is available with a choice of seven four-cylinder engines: four TFSI and three TDI units. All of the engines follow the downsizing principle – they substitute forced induction for displacement and draw their fuel through direct injection units. Their performance range extends from 63 kW (86 hp) to 136 kW (185 hp).

A supercharger and a turbocharger work together to provide the boost in the most powerful 1.4-liter engine. The new 1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp), which will follow at a later date, is particularly interesting. When operating at part load, the cylinder on demand system deactivates two cylinders. This reduces the average fuel consumption to below five liters per 100 km (47.04 US mpg).

All versions of the A1 impress with exemplary fuel economy. Standard cycle values lie between 3.8 and 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers (39.87 - 61.90 US mpg).

Equipped with a manual transmission, both versions of the 1.6 TDI emit just 99 grams CO2 per kilometer (159.33 g/mile), and there is a version of the 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp) that emits 119 grams (191.51 g/mile) when paired with S tronic. The 105 kW (143 hp) 2.0 TDI accelerates the A1 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.2 seconds and consumes just 4.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (57.37 US mpg).

All versions (except the 1.6 TDI with S tronic and the most powerful gasoline engine) come standard with a start-stop system. A particularly high-performance thermal management system in the engine contributes to the low fuel

consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km (46.12 US mpg).

Engine lineup:

1.2 TFSI with 63 kW (86 hp)

1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp)

1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp), somewhat later

1.4 TFSI with 136 kW (185 hp)

1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp)

(4)

1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp)

2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp)

At Audi, efficiency always means high-tech. The seven-speed S tronic is available as an option with three engines and comes standard in the top-of-line version. The dual-clutch transmission shifts extremely quickly, comfortably and with no perceptible interruption to the flow of power. It can be operated as an automatic or manually, with paddles on the steering wheel available as an option.

Thanks to its high efficiency and the intelligent control system, the S tronic also helps to reduce fuel consumption.

Chassis

The agile, wide-track suspension puts the A1 at the top of its class with respect to occupant protection. Whether in the city, on an interurban road or on the

expressway – the small compact is always great fun to drive thanks to its sporty setup, the favorable weight distribution and the direct-ratio steering. The powerful top model sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.9 seconds and features a particularly sporty setup.

The ESP stabilization program with electronic limited slip differential, which comes standard on all models, makes the handling even more precise while also enhancing driving safety. It minimizes understeer at the cornering limit by means of slight braking, which also improves traction.

Equipment

In addition to the Attraction and Ambition trim lines, Audi also offers packages focused on infotainment and interior design. The Ambition line includes such things as 16-inch aluminum wheels, sport seats with lumbar support, a leather steering wheel and aluminum-look interior trim, plus the on-board computer with efficiency program and gear-change indicator.

(5)

Innovative materials and modern colors emphasize the youthful character of the Audi A1. Whether decal sets for the exterior, color-coordinated air vents, LED interior lights or seat covers in expressive colors – customization is the key. The equipment program offers countless opportunities for matching the A1 to the driver’s own personal style, including four paint finishes from which to choose for the roof arch.

Customers can also order a variety of kits and many other features after the initial sale to follow a trend or a whim.

The available infotainment and multimedia systems for the Audi A1 come directly from the full-size class. The top of the line is MMI navigation plus, a media center that sets new standards in the compact segment. It borrows closely from the system used in Audi’s A8 flagship, including the monitor that folds out from the instrument panel and the control unit, which uses MMI logic. The Bluetooth online car phone, which also makes Internet services available under the keyword Audi connect, is unique in this class.

The Connectivity package, which is based on the concert radio, includes a navigation preparation kit, an Audi music interface and a Bluetooth telephone preparation so that the customer can later install a map-based navigation system.

The 465 watt Bose surround sound system with 14 speakers is just one example of the additional high-end complementary features available. Convenient

Bluetooth and wired interfaces are available for cellular phones and external players such as the iPod.

(6)

The Audi A1 Sportback

The new Audi A1 Sportback is several millimeters wider and taller than its three- door sister model, offering 11 millimeters (0.43 in) more headroom and more comfortable access to the rear seat. The five-door model also has its own style when it comes to the color concept. The contrasting finish includes the entire roof and not just the roof arch.

The engine lineup offers a choice of four TFSI and three TDI units producing between 63 kW (86 hp) and 136 kW (185 hp). The 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp) will follow somewhat later. One particularly intriguing option among the gasoline engines is the 1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp), which will follow somewhat later.

The included cylinder on demand system, which deactivates two cylinders under part load, gives the engine groundbreaking efficiency. The seven-speed S tronic is available as an option with three engines and comes standard with the top TFSI model. The dual-clutch transmission underscores the special position the model series occupies in its segment.

Engine lineup:

• 1.2 TFSI with 63 kW (86 hp)

• 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp)

• 1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp), somewhat later

• 1.4 TFSI with 136 kW (185 hp)

• 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp)

• 1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp)

• 2.0 TFSI with 105 kW (143 hp), somewhat later

The five-door model comes standard with four seats, with a fifth seat available at no extra charge. There is an exhaustive list of customization options. The

multimedia modules, which include the Bose surround sound system and MMI navigation plus, are particularly attractive. The high-end media center can be paired with the Bluetooth online car phone, which connectsthe A1 Sportback to the Internet. The integrated WLAN hotspot lets the passengers surf and e-mail.

(7)

The Audi A1 quattro

The dynamic A1 quattro, which Audi is producing in an exclusive series of just 333 units, takes its place at the head of its class. Its engine, a power-enhanced 2.0 TFSI, produces 188 kW (256 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque. A six- speed manual gearbox transfers the power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which uses a hydraulic multi-plate clutch. The small compact sprints to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.7 seconds from a standing start and reaches a top speed of 245 km/h (152.24 mph).

The top model rolls on white 18-inch cast wheels in “Turbine” design and shod with 225/35 tires. Up front, black brake calipers clamp down onto internally vented discs. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) offers a sport mode and can also be switched off entirely.

The body of the Audi A1 quattro is finished predominantly in Glacier White metallic, with the roof in high-gloss black. The large air inlets in the front bumper, the two-tone roof spoiler and the exhaust system’s impressive tailpipes are particularly eye-catching. The headlights, wheels and back end sport red and black color accents.

Cool black dominates the interior. Special details include the leather S sport seats with high-gloss black seatbacks, the red tachometer dial, the contrasting red stitching and the aluminum gear knob. The Audi A1 quattro rolls off the assembly line with a complete range of equipment, including the Bose sound system, MMI navigation plus and the Bluetooth online car phone, which brings the Audi connect Internet services on board.

(8)

The Audi A3 Sportback and the Audi A3 Cabriolet

The five-door Audi A3 Sportback is the athlete in its segment. The upscale equipment and trim underscores its elegant style. Audi optionally equips it with technologies such as the S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the Audi magnetic ride suspension system and quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Body and interior

The design expresses the sporty elegance of the A3 Sportback. The optional xenon plus headlights are combined with LED daytime running lights. The single- frame grille element and the trims on the B-posts are painted in high-gloss black and the lower air inlets have chrome struts. Light guide rods in the tail lights form distinctive contours.

Sporty elegance infuses the interior, as well. The instruments feature faces backed in gray, and a flat-bottomed, leather sport steering wheel is available as an option. The air vents are framed in black rings while the optional navigation system sports a high-gloss bezel.

Gleaming aluminum-look applications adorn a number of control elements. In models equipped with a manual transmission, a gear-change indicator in the driver information system (standard in the Ambition and Ambiente lines)

complements the operating concept. The front-wheel drive A3 Sportback offers impressive luggage capacity that varies between 370 and 1,100 liters (13.07 and 38.85 cu ft).

Drivetrain

The engine lineup includes eight powerplants – four gasoline and four diesel units. All are turbocharged four-cylinder units with direct injection and badged as TFSI and TDI. Audi couples many of the engines with a start-stop system that works together with both the manual and the S tronic automatic transmissions.

(9)

The entry-level gasoline engine is the 1.2 TFSI; it exemplifies Audi’s downsizing strategy – the substitution of turbocharging for displacement. The four-cylinder unit develops 77 kW (105 hp) and a hefty 175 Nm of torque (129.07 lb-ft) from its small displacement of 1,197 cc, yet when combined with the S tronic averages just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (44.38 US mpg). The most powerful gasoline engine is the 2.0 TFSI with 147 kW (200 hp).

The diesel range extends from the 1.6 TDI developing 66 kW (90 hp) to the 2.0 TDI with an output of 125 kW (170 hp). The most efficient engine in the lineup is the 1.6-liter TDI with 77 kW (105 hp). The most fuel-efficient version of the A3 Sportback consumes on average just 3.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (60.31 US mpg). Modifications to the body and chassis contribute towards this excellent figure.

Engine lineup:

1.2 TFSI with 77 kW (105 hp)

1.4 TFSI with 92 kW (125 hp)

1.8 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI quattro with 118 kW (160 hp)

2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI quattro with 147 kW (200 hp)

1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp)

1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp)

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 103 kW (140 hp)

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 125 kW (170 hp)

The transmission lineup is likewise very diverse. Most engine versions in the A3 model series are paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Audi offers many of the engines with the S tronic. Ambition comes standard with shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Depending on engine version, the dual-clutch transmission has six or seven speeds. The seven-speed version uses dry clutches; the elimination of the oil supply further improves the transmission’s high efficiency.

(10)

The transmission of power to all four wheels likewise underscores the exceptional position that the A3 Sportback enjoys in the premium compact class. Audi

supplies quattro permanent all-wheel drive for four engine versions. Its hydraulic multi-plate clutch sends a majority of the power to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and redirects it to the rear quickly and flexibly when necessary.

Chassis

The chassis of the Audi A3 Sportback combines a sporty character with supreme safety and a high level of comfort. Its poise stems from solutions such as a four- link rear suspension, which handles longitudinal and transverse forces

independently, and the electromechanical power steering. In front-wheel drive models, the electronic stabilization program (ESP) integrates an electronic

differential lock, which – at the vehicle’s cornering limit – manages the distribution of drive torques to the wheels via minor, barely perceptible braking.

The adaptive damper control system Audi magnetic ride, which exploits the properties of an electromagnetic fluid is available in models with engines developing 103 kW (140 hp) and upwards. The dampers can be set for a comfortable or sporty characteristic. The system modifies the damping forces within this framework in milliseconds, when necessary, lowering the body by 15 millimeters (0.59 in). A conventional sport suspension and the taut S line sport suspension from quattro GmbH are also available.

Equipment

The extensive range of high-end options demonstrates the technological standard of the A3 model series. These include the adaptive light dynamic

cornering light system for the xenon plus headlights, the high-beam assistant and the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic.

The park assist system is another attractive feature. When driving by at speeds up to 30 km/h (18.64 mph), its ultrasound sensors scan the parking spaces parallel with the road; when it detects one that is large enough to reverse into, it

(11)

All the driver needs to do is engage reverse and operate the accelerator, clutch and brakes – the car maneuvers independently and precisely into the space.

Audi A3 Cabriolet

The Audi A3 Cabriolet is an eye-catcher with its sleek and elegant lines. Its soft top is characterized by low weight and excellent fit; the hydraulic drive opens the top in only nine seconds. The top takes up very little space when in its storage compartment, thus allowing for a sporty vehicle design. Both semi-automatic and fully automated versions of the top are available – the latter as a specially

soundproofed and thermally insulated acoustic top.

The body structure of the compact premium convertible contains a high proportion of high-strength and ultra high-strength steels as well as targeted reinforcements that provide maximum rigidity and crash safety. The cabin offers ample space for four. The split folding rear seat backs can be unlocked from the luggage compartment to reveal a large load-through hatch. This increases luggage capacity from 260 to 674 liters (9.18 - 23.80 cu ft).

The A3 Cabriolet rolls off the assembly line with four gasoline and two TDI engines. Direct fuel injection and turbocharging provide for powerful performance and high efficiency. Most engines feature the start-stop system. The S tronic with six or seven speeds is available for the three most powerful engines. All engines power the front wheels.

Engine lineup:

1.2 TFSI with 77 kW (105 hp)

1.4 TFSI with 92 kW (125 hp)

1.8 TFSI with 118 kW (160 hp)

2.0 TFSI with 147 kW (200 hp)

1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp)

2.0 TDI with 103 kW (140 hp)

(12)

The Audi A4, the Audi A4 Avant and the Audi A4 allroad quattro

The Audi A4 is a winner in the mid-size class. In fall 2011, the ten-millionth unit rolled off the assembly line since its predecessor model series, the Audi 80, was launched. The most recent appearance and technical updates have made the best-seller more attractive than ever.

Body and interior

The Audi A4 is a spacious automobile. Its body, comprising mostly high-strength and ultra high-strength steels, is rigid, lightweight and safe. The trunk has a capacity of 480 liters (16.95 cu ft). Capacity with the rear seat backs folded down (a standard feature in the quattro versions) is 962 liters (33.97 cu ft). The optional xenon plus headlights with included LED daytime running lights can be combined with adaptive light, which illuminates the road differently depending on the

situation at hand.

The interior offers all of the classic strengths of the brand, with uncompromising fit and finish, even better coordinated colors and materials, and logical, intuitive controls. Audi offers the luxurious climate-controlled comfort seats as an option for the driver and front-seat passenger. Small fans provide six-speed ventilation to the seat cushion and back.

Drivetrain

The revamped engine lineup of the A4 is particularly broad, featuring 13 forced- induction powerplants with direct fuel injection. The update has reduced fuel consumption levels by 11 percent on average, despite the increased power and torque of many of the engines. The top engine is the supercharged 3.0 TFSI with 200 kW (120 hp).

Among the gasoline engines, the 1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp) is particularly noteworthy for its groundbreaking efficiency, consuming on average just 5.7 liters per 100 km (41.27 US mpg).

(13)

The newly developed four-cylinder unit features major innovations in a number of areas: the control of the valves and their lift, the thermal management concept, the injection system, the turbocharger and the integration of the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head.

The most efficient model in the A4 lineup is the 2.0 TDI with 100 kW (136 hp).

The four-cylinder diesel produces 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque yet consumes just 4.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (56.00 US mpg) on average, a CO2 equivalent of just 112 grams per km (180.25 g/mile). Two other particularly environment- friendly engines join it in the A4 lineup. A sophisticated exhaust treatment system in the A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro reduces NOx in the exhaust to the level of the future Euro 6 standard. The A4 2.0 TFSI flexible fuel is also designed for operation on bioethanol E 85.

The engines:

1.8 TFSI with 88 kW (120 hp)

1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp)

2.0 TFSI flexible fuel and 2.0 TFSI flexible fuel quattro with 132 kW (180 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

Three different transmission technologies are available for the A4: a six-speed manual with shift indicator, the continuously variable multitronic and the seven- speed dual-clutch S tronic. quattro permanent all-wheel drive with torque vectoring is available beginning with the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp) and is standard with the most powerful TFSI and TDI units.

(14)

In the two top models, it can be combined with the sport differential, which actively distributes the propulsive power between the rear wheels.

Chassis

Largely made of aluminum, the chassis of the A4 has been further refined. The front suspension is a five-link construction; with a trapezoidal-link suspension at the rear. The new electromechanical power steering is sensitive and highly efficient. Audi also offers the optional Audi drive select control system with efficiency mode.

Audi drive select can be extended with other technologies, namely the sport differential, adaptive damper control and dynamic steering. The latter’s

superposition gear can vary the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent. ESP with electronic limited slip differential is standard in all front-wheel drive versions of the A4. By briefly pulsing the brakes at the front inside wheel, it makes handling more neutral and ensures solid grip when exiting the curve.

Assistance and communications systems

A wide range of assistance systems are offered for the A4 model series. The radar-based adaptive cruise control (ACC) maintains the proper interval between the car and the vehicle ahead at all times. At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), it initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision.

Audi active lane assist helps the driver to maintain the lane, and Audi side assist monitors the area behind the A4 to make lane changes safer. The driver

information system with rest recommendation is standard.

Audi also offers a wide selection of communication and infotainment features.

Besides the sound system from the Danish hi-fi specialists Bang & Olufsen, the versatile top-level MMI navigation plus system is particularly noteworthy here. It can be combined with the Bluetooth online car phone, which connects the A4 to the Internet and brings the tailored Audi connect services on board.

(15)

The Audi A4 Avant

The Audi A4 Avant offers all the strengths of the model family combined with the most beautiful station wagon design in its class and outstanding practicality in everyday and recreational use. Its luggage compartment holds between 490 and 1,430 liters (17.30 and 50.50 cu ft).

The cargo area cover slides upward with a gentle push. Roof rails and a reversible cargo floor are standard; a load-through hatch with a ski and

snowboard sack is available as an option. Audi also offers an electromechanical power rear hatch, a reversible mat and the cargo area package with rails, telescoping rod and lashing strap as options.

The Audi A4 Avant has received the same extensive exterior, interior and technology updates as the sedan and is available with the same engine-

transmission pairings. Among the lineup’s highlights are the new, highly efficient 1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp), the powerful 3.0 TFSI, the multitronic, the S tronic, quattro all-wheel drive for models with the more powerful engines and the sport differential for V6 quattro models.

The engines:

1.8 TFSI with 88 kW (120 hp)

1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp)

2.0 TFSI flexible fuel and 2.0 TFSI flexible fuel quattro with 132 kW (180 hp)

2.0 TDI with 120 kW (163 hp)

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 130 kW (177 hp)

3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

(16)

There are also virtually no differences between the A4 Avant and the sedan when it comes to equipment and trim. The driver assistance systems, infotainment and Audi connect put the Avant at the head of the field. The same applies to the sportily balanced aluminum chassis, which can be combined with the optional dynamic steering and damper control. The new electromechanical power steering system is also used in the Avant.

The Audi A4 allroad quattro

With its permanent all-wheel drive, the A4 allroad quattro is equally at home on road and off. It is somewhat larger, particularly in height, than the A4 Avant on which it is based. It offers 180 millimeters (7.09 in) of ground clearance, and distinctive design details underscore its strong character. Here, too, the trunk holds from 490 to 1,430 liters (17.30 to 50.50 cu ft) of luggage. Optional features include a load-securing set and an electromechanical rear hatch.

The A4 allroad includes all of the same exterior, interior and under-the-skin improvements as the sedan and the Avant. Its range of equipment is exactly as functional as with the other A4 models. One special function is offroad detection (ORD), which detects the condition of the driving surface and adapts the control characteristic of the ESP stabilization program accordingly. The ESP improves propulsion when accelerating on loose surfaces by tolerating more slip.

The drivetrain lineup is much more streamlined than that of the sister models.

quattro permanent all-wheel drive with torque vectoring is standard, with either the six-speed manual or the seven-speed S tronic delivering the power to the wheels.

The engines:

2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (211 hp)

2.0 TDI quattro with 105 kW (143 hp), somewhat later

2.0 TDI quattro with 130 kW (177 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

(17)

The Audi A5 Sportback, the Audi A5 Coup and A5 Cabriolet

Its appearance alone makes the Audi A5 Sportback an Audi masterpiece, with its flowing silhouette, the sharp lines and the muscular surfaces making a powerful statement. The product refresh a few months ago included new and distinctive accents for the elegant five-door.

The optional Audi drive select system with its selectable characteristics makes the driving experience even more attractive. Besides the power steering, engine management and automatic air conditioning system, it also integrates the optional sport differential, dynamic steering and chassis with damper control modules.

Assistance systems

The driver information system with rest recommendation is standard in the A5 Sportback. It detects if the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning. Options include Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist and the

updated adaptive cruise control, which uses radar to keep the five-door model at a constant interval to the vehicle ahead. If the threat of a rear-end collision becomes imminent at speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), this system will perform a full brake application.

Infotainment systems

The infotainment systems in the A5 Sportback have also been significantly upgraded. The optional top unit is the MMI navigation plus, which can be

combined with the Bluetooth online car phone. Under the name Audi connect, the latter delivers attractive online services to the car and connects the passengers’

mobile devices to the Internet via WLAN.

The Audi A5 Coupé

The Audi A5 Coupé with its enticingly elegant lines is already a modern classic:

Audi received the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany for it in 2010. The two-door model also is a very capable everyday vehicle featuring a power rear hatch and split folding rear seats. Thanks to the lightweight steel body with aluminum front fenders, the curb weight (without driver) of the base model is just 1,425 kilograms (3,141.59 lb).

(20)

The A5 Coupé received the same exterior, interior and under-the-skin updates as the A5 Sportback with the product refresh. Its eight available engines cover a range between 105 kW (143 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp). The compact, high-tech 1.8 TFSI gasoline unit is particularly attractive with its average fuel consumption of just 5.7 liters per 100 km (41.27 US mpg).

The engines:

1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp)

The Audi A6, the Audi A6 hybrid and the Audi A6 Avant The Audi A6

Audi is once again setting standards in the full-size category with the seventh- generation A6. With a broad portfolio of innovations and a lightweight body featuring numerous aluminum components, the new model series is writing the next chapter of the A6 success story.

Body and design

The design of the A6 stands for athleticism and elegance. The sedan is 4.92 meters (16.14 ft) long and 1.87 meters (6.14 ft) wide, but just 1.46 meters

(4.79 ft) tall – the sportiest proportions in its class. The long engine hood, the low, taut roof line and the distinctive lines create a dynamic overall impression. Up front, optional LED headlights underscore the distinctive appearance.

Thanks to an intelligent composite construction concept, the body is extremely lightweight, rigid and safe. The numerous aluminum components and the high- tech steels are the backbone of Audi’s consistent ultra-lightweight design concept and reduce the body’s weight compared to its predecessor.

Depending on the version, the new business sedan is as much as 80 kilograms (176.37 lb) lighter than the previous model. Audi, the pioneer of lightweight design, has once again reversed the weight spiral and thus established new standards. The A6 2.0 TFSI has a curb weight (without driver) of just 1,540 kg (3,395.12 lb).

The body offers additional advantages, too. Modern materials and construction methods provide for a very low interior noise level. The precise matching of all components and systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings provide excellent vibration comfort.

(23)

Passenger compartment

The spacious interior of the new Audi A6 takes up the sinewy style of the exterior design. Its salient element is the “wrap-around” – a decorative inlay encircling the driver and the front-seat passenger. The elegant face of the instrument panel emphasizes the tension of the cockpit.

Every interior detail documents the care with which Audi builds cars. All

materials, including an innovative layered wood veneer called Beaufort oak, have been carefully selected and processed. The front seats are available with optional ventilation and massage functions. The ambient lighting or the interior lighting package accent the interior with tiny highlights.

The new Audi A6 features the intuitive ergonomics concept that characterizes all of the brand’s models. An efficient deluxe automatic air conditioning system and the MMI radio advanced control system come standard. The MMI navigation plus system with MMI touch is available as an option. Many features of the hard drive navigation system can be controlled via the touchpad. Audi offers an optional head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield.

Drivetrain

Audi offers the new A6 with a choice of seven powerful and highly efficient four- and six-cylinder engines. The three gasoline and four TDI engines produce between 130 kW (177 hp) and 230 kW (313 hp). All engines use key

technologies from Audi’s modular efficiency platform – the innovative thermal management and the start-stop system.

Compared to the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 21 percent – a top mark in its class.

The most fuel-efficient unit in the lineup is the 2.0 TDI. When paired with the manual transmission, it consumes only 4.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (48.0 US mpg), which corresponds to only 129 grams of CO2/km (207.61 g/mile). The top engine is the new 3.0 TDI with twin turbochargers. The V6 diesel powers the sedan with 230 kW (313 hp) and 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) of torque.

(24)

The engines:

2.0 TFSI with 132 kW (180 hp)

2.8 FSI and 2.8 FSI quattro with 150 kW (204 hp)

3.0 TFSI quattro with 220 kW (300 hp)

2.0 TDI with 130 kW (177 hp)

3.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI quattro with 150 kW (204 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 230 kW (313 hp)

Audi offers the new A6 with a wide range of drivetrains. Depending on the engine, the choices include a manual six-speed, the continuously variable multitronic and – new in this model line – the sporty seven-speed S tronic. The top diesel is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic. All engines contribute to efficiency with their wide gear spread and low internal friction.

Power flows to either the front wheels or all four wheels, depending on the engine. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system features a self-locking, crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring for superior traction, stability and dynamics. It is perfectly complemented by the optional sport differential, which actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

Chassis

The chassis of the new A6 combines superior comfort with sporty precision. Its suspension components are made of aluminum; the power steering features an electromechanical drive for high efficiency. The big sedan rolls on wheels measuring between 16 and 20 inches in diameter, behind which are powerful brakes.

The Audi connect online services connect the new Audi A6 to the Internet via the Bluetooth online car phone. A WLAN hotspot provides the connection to mobile end devices, and the driver can use the tailored services of Audi connect.

Topping the line of hi-fi options is the high-quality Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.

The top-end navigation system, MMI navigation plus with pioneering touchpad control, works closely together with the optional driver assistance and safety systems in the new A6. It forwards the route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop &

go function. This enables these systems to recognize complex scenarios and support the driver.

The Audi pre sense safety system can in many situations reduce the severity of accidents and their consequences, or even avoid them all together. The Audi active lane assist helps the driver to keep the A6 on course, and the park assist system relieves the driver of the chore of steering when parallel parking.

Additional high-end features include the night vision assistant with marking of detected pedestrians, speed limit detection and the various versions of the parking assistant.

The Audi A6 hybrid

Audi will begin volume production of the A6 hybrid early this year. The sporty and efficient parallel hybrid produces a combined total of 180 kW (245 hp) of system output and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of system torque. Its combustion engine, a 2.0 TFSI with 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque, works together with an electric motor producing 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 Nm

(154.89 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor is mounted directly behind the TFSI in the space usually occupied by the torque converter in front of the modified eight- speed tiptronic. The gearbox sends the power to the front wheels.

(26)

The lightweight and compact lithium-ion battery is located in a crash-proof area in the trunk. It provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and 40 kW of power. Two

different methods are used to air cool the battery, depending on need: with air blown from the passenger compartment by a fan and via a separate cooling circuit coupled to the deluxe automatic air conditioning system. This technology keeps the battery within the suitable temperature window over a broad range, ensuring a relatively large proportion of electric driving.

The Audi A6 hybrid can drive at up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) purely on electric power and has a range of three kilometers (1.86 miles) at a constant 60 km/h (37.28 mph). It can also drive using the combustion engine alone or in hybrid mode. The A6 hybrid recovers energy during braking and activates both power sources at the same time during strong acceleration. Special displays on the instrument cluster and the MMI monitor depict the various driving states.

The Audi A6 hybrid combines the power of a V6 engine with the consumption of a four-cylinder unit. The hybrid sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h (149.13 mph). Standard fuel consumption is less than 6.2 liters per 100 km (37.94 US mpg), which

corresponds to CO2 emissions of less than 145 grams per km (233.35 g/mile).

The Audi A6 Avant

The new Audi A6 Avant was launched on the market just a few months ago. All of Audi's high-tech expertise is packed into every detail of the classic large business station wagon. The flowing lines with the relatively flat D-pillars visualizes its sporty and progressive character.

Audi offers the Q5 with a choice of six engines: three gasoline engines and three TDI units. All engines are direct injection units; five of them are turbocharged.

The four-cylinder models with manual transmission also come standard with the start-stop system and a shift indicator.

The engines:

2.0 TFSI quattro with 132 kW (180 hp)

2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (211 hp)

3.2 FSI quattro with 199 kW (270 hp)

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 105 kW (143 hp)

2.0 TDI quattro with 125 kW (170 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 176 kW (240 hp)

All four-cylinder models come standard with a manual six-speed transmission.

Audi offers the eight-speed tiptronic as an option for the 2.0 TFSI with 155 kW (211 hp); the seven-speed S tronic is available for the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp). The dual-clutch transmission is standard with the two V6 engines.

Almost all of the engines in the Q5 are paired with quattro all-wheel drive. Only the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp) comes standard with front-wheel drive.

Chassis

The chassis also contributes to the sporty character of the Audi Q5. The five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension consist largely of aluminum components; the large brakes ensure rapid deceleration. The optional Audi drive select system manages the engine’s throttle response, the steering characteristic and the shift points of S tronic. Two components that can be paired are adaptive damper control and dynamic steering.

The Audi Q5 also holds its own in rough terrain: the electronic stabilization program (ESP) and anti-lock brakes both have an offroad mode. The ESP features an additional function for road driving. If a roof rack is mounted, thus raising the center of gravity, the system intervenes somewhat sooner at the limit of handling.

Equipment

On request, Audi equips the Q5 with high-tech systems typical of the full-size class. Audi lane assist helps to keep in lane; Audi side assist warns of possible hazards when changing lanes. The adaptive cruise control system maintains the desired interval between the SUV and the vehicle ahead. An attractive range of multimedia modules is also available, ranging from MMI navigation plus to a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro

The Q5 hybrid quattro joined the Q5 family in late 2011. It is the first full hybrid in the B premium segment to be offered anywhere in the world with a lithium-ion battery as standard. A parallel hybrid, the highly efficient SUV combines the performance of a six-cylinder with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. Power is provided by a 2.0 TFSI with 155 kW (211 hp) and an electric motor with up to 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft) of torque. System output is 180 kW (245 hp) and system torque 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft).

The Audi Q5 hybrid reaches 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.1 seconds from a standing start and has a top speed of 225 km/h (139.81 mph). At a constant speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph), it has a purely electric range of up to three kilometers (1.86 miles), and its top speed of 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in electric mode also sets standards. Average fuel consumption is 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.09 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 159 grams per km (255.89 g/mile).

The sporty SUV can operate in one of five drive modes: Driving with the combustion engine alone, with the electric drive alone or in hybrid mode is

possible, as are recuperation and boosting. The driver can choose between three programs. The EV characteristic map gives priority to the electric drive in the city;

the D mode controls both the engine and the electric motor for optimal consumption; and the S mode is designed for a sporty driving style.

An extensively modified eight-speed tiptronic serves the power transmission, without the aid of a torque converter. Instead there is the disc-shaped electric motor, which is combined with a multi-plate clutch. It connects and disconnects the electric motor and the TFSI precisely, gently and quickly in every situation.

Energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery system weighing a mere 36.7 kg (80.91 lb). The compact unit beneath the cargo floor hardly reduces luggage space at all. The battery provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and 39 kW of power. Two different methods are used to air-cool the battery, depending on need: with air from the passenger compartment or with air from a cooling circuit coupled to the main automatic air conditioning system.
