Keydets Travel to Richmond to Take on VCU

Team Looks to Break Two-Game Losing Streak, Battles Rams For Second Time

VMI basketball hits the road Wednesday, venturing to Richmond to take on the Rams of VCU. Game time inside the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center is set for 7:30 p.m. As always, live stats and a live audio broad- cast are available via VMIKeydets.com. In addition, live video is accessible through VCU’s website at VCUAthletics.com.

In its last contest, VMI dropped to 0-2 in Big South action by falling to Presbyterian College 92-78 Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall. Stan Okoye had a career-high 30 points, but the rest of the team made just 15 shots and the Blue Hose placed all five of their starters in double figures to give the road team in the series its first win in the rivalry between the schools.

Freshman point guard Rodney Glasgow is the current Big South Freshman of the Week, after being tagged for that honor on Monday afternoon. He recorded a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 assists last Monday vs.

Central Penn College, followed that with 17 points, six rebounds and six steals in an overtime loss to Winthrop, and Glasgow completed his week with eight points and six rebounds against Presbyterian College. He also recorded a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio in the three-game span, and now ranks second in the conference with 5.33 assists per game.

VMI is 7-8 all-time under Duggar Baucom in game number 8-10 of its seasons, but the Keydets have either won or lost all three of those games in three of Baucom’s five years at the Institute. VMI will be looking to avoid a continuation of that streak Wednesday night, after losing to Winthrop and Presbyterian College in games 8 and 9 of the 2010-11 sea- son.

VMI head coach Duggar Baucom will be looking to become the third-winningest coach in school history Wednesday night. He is currently tied with longtime head man Charlie Schmaus, as both of them have amassed 75 wins at the helm of the Keydets. Despite only being at the Institute for five seasons, Baucom trails just Bart Bellairs’ 116 wins and Joe Cantafio’s 79 victories.

VMI is playing only its second game against Virginia Commonwealth, a very low number for in-state Division I foes.

By comparison, among those Virginia D-I foes VMI has played, the Keydets have only faced two schools twice or less.

VMI has faced Norfolk State once (2003) and George Mason twice.

LLaasstt MMeeeettiinngg wwiitthh VVCCUU ((1122//2211//11999999))::

 In the only previous meeting between the schools, VCU earned a 101-86 win over the Keydets in Richmond. VMI puts five players in double figures, but it is not enough to overcome the Rams’ efforts.

A VVMMII wwiinn aaggaaiinnsstt VVCCUU wwoouulldd::

Move the Keydets to 7-3 on the season, their best second-best start through 10 games since joining the Big South.

Even the all-time series at one win apiece, and make VMI head coach Duggar Baucom the third-winningest coach in Institute history, as noted above.

Several Keydets are among the Big South leaders in early editions of statistical rankings. Stan Okoye leads in scoring, while also pacing the league in field goal per- centage and ranking third in rebounds per game.

Freshman Rodney Glasgow is also ranked in several cat- egories, as is Okoye’s classmate, Keith Gabriel (see page 5). In addition, the team is second in the NCAA in scor- ing.

D

Drriivvee FFoorr FFiivvee::

Last season, the Keydets led Division I in scoring (88.6 ppg) for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first team in history to do so. VMI paced the nation relatively easily, scoring 5.5 more points per contest than the category’s runner-up, BYU, and did so despite their lowest output per game in the Baucom era. This year, the Keydets will bid for a fifth straight scoring crown, and they rank second in this week’s (Dec. 6) statistical update with 95.1 PPG, trailing only the Washington Huskies.

SSccoouuttiinngg V VC CU U::

VCU is an upstart squad this year, as they have opened the campaign 5-2. That includes wins over UCLA and, in the squad’s conference opener, William & Mary this past Saturday. The only two losses for the Rams this season have come by five points or less, an overtime set-

back at South Florida (12/1) and a 77-72 loss to Tennessee at the NIT Season Tip-Off (12/24).

K

Keeyyddeettss EEaarrnniinngg V Vootteess::

In the Nov. 22 Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the Keydets received a single vote, putting them on the “other receiving votes” listing. Fans may remember that VMI notched votes in four different Associated Press polls dur- ing its run to the Big South finals in 2008-09.

VMI also earned multiple votes (24 pts.) in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, released Nov.

29. That put the Keydets approximately in the middle of the “other receiving votes” listing, tied with Fairfield and two points ahead of Bradley, North Dakota St. and Weber St.

O

Onn TThhee H Hoorriizzoonn::

On the horizon for the Keydets is a meeting with Longwood this coming Saturday at Cameron Hall. It will be just the fourth meeting all-time between the schools, with VMI holding a 2-1 edge. It will also be the final home game for the Keydets until Thursday, Jan. 6. After that contest, VMI will have played eight of its 15 home games on the season just one month into the season.

After defeating Southern Virginia Nov. 23, the Keydets are 23-0 against non-Division I schools under head coach Duggar Baucom. VMI will not play another non-Division I game this season.

The number 34 is famous in the sporting world, as it is associated with such legendary

figures as Nolan Ryan, Walter Payton and Hakeem Olajuwon. Keith Gabriel added that number to his basketball resume Nov. 23, when he hit a three-pointer with 8:47 left in the first half.

That made him the 34th player in VMI his- tory to go over 1,000 career points, as he joined Austin Kenon as the only current Keydets to do so. Gabriel now ranks 29th on VMI’s all- time scoring list, after notching 14 points against Presbyterian to surpass Aaron Demory’s career output.

C

Clleeaanniinngg U Upp tthhee G Gllaassss::

After only outrebounding an opponent three times last season, the Keydets got off to a strong start on the glass this year. For the first time in the Duggar Baucom era, VMI outre- bounded an opponent for three straight games, as the Keydets held a +15 edge in the opener versus Randolph, eaked out a slim +2 margin against UMBC and then outrebounded UVA- Wise by 10 to accomplish the feat. The streak ended when Jacksonville State held a four- rebound edge on Nov. 18.

On the glass, the Keydets have been led by Stan Okoye, who is averaging 9.1 RPG, while Nick Gore sits at 5.3 RPG and two other play- ers, Keith Gabriel and Stephen Sargent are approaching the five rebound per game mark.

BBlloocckk PPaarrttyy::

The Keydets have amassed an impressive total of blocked shots already this season, and may assail last year’s program record perform- ance.

Led by freshman D.J. Covington, who equaled a VMI record with nine blocks against Southern Virginia Nov. 23, the Keydets blocked a Cameron Hall record 13 shots against the Knights. All told this season, VMI has posted 51 blocks coming into the VCU game. That puts them nearly halfway to the program’s #5 per- formance, a 105-block effort in 2008-09, and could give them a chance to better their 144- block performance from last season.

O

Odddd iiss EEvveenn BBeetttteerr::

VMI will be looking to continue an odd trend, quite literally, in 2010-11. Each of the last two seasons ending in odd years, 2006-07 and 2008-09, have seen VMI advance to the title game of the Big South Championship.

Meanwhile, the even numbered years have concluded with first round losses.

TTrriioo ooff TTV V G Gaam meess A Annnnoouunncceedd::

VMI will have a trio of TV games this sea- son, including the a date with these Winthrop Eagles on MASN on Feb. 26. The VMI/West Virginia game Nov. 27 was also shown on MASN, while Jan. 20’s Liberty/VMI tilt will be shown on the Flames Television Network.

Seven different Keydet players had at least 16 points, VMI notched the second-most points in school history and the Keydets routed the Central Penn College Knights 151-92 Monday night, Nov. 27 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

The 151-point output was just five points shy of the largest scoring efforts in program history, a pair of 156-point efforts in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. It was the team's largest margin of victory and most points scored overall since Nov. 20, 2008, when the Keydets bested Stevenson by 61 markers.

It was also the first time VMI had seven players in double figure scoring since that con- test with Stevenson. On this night, Keith Gabriel paced the output with 27 points, while Stan Okoye had 26 and Ron Burks had a career- high 24 markers, including a career-best five three-pointers.

The home team was helped by 21 three- pointers, the first game VMI had with 20-plus treys since January of 2009, and an effort that tied the 14th-most three-pointers made in NCAA Division I history. Finally, a school- record 85-point second half put the game away, although Central Penn held just two leads all night, 2-0 and 2-1.

VMI suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 5-1 while West Virginia improved to 4-1.

The Keydets were paced in scoring by junior guard Keith Gabriel and freshman point guard Rodney Glasgow who each scored 18 points while senior guard Austin Kenon added 10 points.

VMI had cut the deficit to 64-60 with seven-plus minutes left, thanks to a 13-5 run, but West Virginia closed the game with an 18- 6 spurt to seal the win.

Freshman D.J. Covington had 13 points and tied a school record with nine blocks, while Keith Gabriel went over the 1,000 career point plateau and the VMI Keydets went to 5-0 for the first time in the modern era by defeating the Southern Virginia Knights 94-78 Tuesday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

VMI's 5-0 start is the program's best in the modern era, as the Keydets had not accomplished that feat since the 1921-22 season.

Covington's nine blocks tied Eric Mann's nine rejections against The Citadel on Jan. 15, 2000. Only one other Keydet had ever posted more than six rejections in a single contest. Covington also had nine points and nine rebounds, missing a triple-double by just one of each sta- tistic.

Gabriel started the contest 0 for 5, but finally hit the needed three- pointer at the 8:47 mark, becoming the 34th player in Keydet history, and second active VMI player, to sur- pass the 1,000-point plateau.

Keith Gabriel's step-back three-pointer with 4:51 left keyed a 9-1 run and sent the VMI Keydets to a 65-55 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in non-conference basketball action Thursday night, Nov. 18, at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

Stan Okoye had his third con- secutive double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to pace VMI. Gabriel had 15 points for VMI, including eight over the final 5:26, and now sits just three points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Keydets defeated the UVA-Wise Cavaliers 120-88 Tues., Nov. 16 at VMI's Cameron Hall.

The win brings the Keydet mark to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1985-86 season, and brings VMI head coach Duggar Baucom's career-record against non- Division I opponents to 21-0. VMI also earned its fifth consecutive 2-0 start at home, a streak dating back to 2005-06.

The Keydets were helped by a stellar 34 for 38 effort at the charity stripe, including 19 of 20 (95%) in the second half. Six players were perfect from the foul line, including Okoye and Burks going 6 for 6 apiece. Finally, the Keydets continued their run of strong performances on the glass, outrebounding UVA-Wise 49-39.

Keith Gabriel had 30 points, Stan Okoye had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and the VMI Keydets moved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 sea- son, as they defeated the UMBC Retrievers 94-77 in non-conference basketball action Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14 in Baltimore, Md.

After a nip-and-tuck first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, UMBC took a two- point lead four minutes into the sec- ond half, thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Justin Fry, giving the home team a 45-43 edge. Just 12 seconds later, Okoye answered with a three-point play of his own, sparking a 17-6 run and giving the Keydets the lead for good.

Virginia Military Institute head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of Brian Brown (Kings Mountain, N.C./Kings Mountain H.S.) and Quinton Upshur (Norfolk, Va./Booker T. Washington H.S.) to national let- ters-of-intent to attend VMI and play basketball for the Keydets.

"We are so excited to have Quinton Upshur and Brian Brown and their families join our VMI Basketball program, "said Baucom. "Both men bring a high level of character to our basketball family and will do very well in the classroom, in the Corps and on the basketball court. My staff has done an exceptional job again bringing in quality cadet-athletes to the Institute."

Brown, a 5'11, 180 combo guard, aver- aged 19.7 points per game as a junior with 6.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He shot 53 percent from the field in 2009-10, including 36 percent from 3-point range.

"Brian can really score, "said Baucom. "He is a very good three-point shooter but has the explosiveness to get in the lane and finish at the rim. Brian's versatility allows him to play both the point and off the ball as a shooting guard."

Upshur is a 6-5, 190 forward who plays the wing position and averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as a junior. He is also a standout on the Booker T. Washington volleyball team.

“Q is very long and is a great athlete," says Baucom. "He will be very disruptive in our full court pressure defense but can also score in a variety of ways. He is an excellent rebounder from the wing position."

Kenon also ranked among the Big South leaders in assists (fifth, 3.62) and steals (10th, 1.41). He scored 20 points in a game 12 times, including three 30-point contests that all came against League foes. In Conference games last season, he upped his averages to 19.4 points and 84.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Chavis Holmes ’09, part of two Big South Championship finalist teams during his time at VMI, was selected by the Reno Bighorns in the fourth round of Monday, Nov. 1’s, NBA Development League (NBDL) draft.

Holmes was a four-year starter at VMI and was an early, integral part of VMI head coach Duggar Baucom’s uptempo system, as he led the NCAA in steals per game in 2008-09 (3.4). He also scored 22 points per game that season, lead- ing the conference, and was an All-Big South First Team selection. Holmes sits fourth on VMI’s all- time scoring chart with 2,065 points and, along with his brother Travis, formed the highest-scoring pair of twins in NCAA Division I history.

Since leaving the Institute, Holmes spent the 2009-10 season playing in Spain, averaging 13.2 points per game for Caja Rioja. He also worked out with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2009.

Holmes is the third former Keydet to enter the NBDL, joining his brother Travis and Reggie Williams ’08, who now suits up for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.
