Foreword
This European Standard has been prepared by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 72 "Automatic fire detection systems”, the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This European Standard supersedes EN 54-1:1976.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by September 1996, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by
September 1996.
This standard has been prepared in cooperation with the CEA (Comité Européen des Assurances) and with EURALARM (Association of European Manufacturers of Fire and Intruder Alarm Systems).
The significant differences from EN 54-1:1976 are:
- a change in the general title;
- a change in the scope to include coverage of the way in which components are installed and used;
- changes to the format and structure of the series;
- extension to cover new parts.
NOTE: The current and proposed future structures of the EN 54 series are given in annex A.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
0 Introduction
The function of a fire detection system is to detect fire at the earliest practicable moment, and to give signals and indications so that appropriate action can be taken.
The function of a fire alarm system is to give audible and/or visible signals to occupants of the building who may be at risk
from a fire.
Fire detection and fire alarm functions may be combined in a
single system.

Denna europeiska standard har utarbetats av CEN/TC 72 - Branddetekterings- och brandlarmsystem - med sekretariat från Storbritannien.
Standarden ersätter tidigare utgåva av EN 54-1 från 1976.
Denna europeiska standard skall ges ut som nationell standard, antingen genom publicering av identisk text eller genom fastställelse senast September 1996 då också motstridig nationell standard skall vara indragen.
Standarden har utarbetats i samarbete med CEA (Comité Européen des Assurances) och EURALARM (Association of European Manufacturers of Fire and Intruder Alarm Systems).
De betydelsefulla skillnaderna jämfort med EN 54-l från 1976 är följande:

0 Orientering
Ett branddetekteringssystems funktion är att upptäcka brand så tidigt som praktiskt är möjligt och att avge signaler och indikeringar så att lämpliga åtgärder kan vidtas.

1 Scope
1.1 This series of European Standards specifies:
- requirements, test methods and performance criteria against which the effectiveness and reliability of the component parts of fire detection and fire alarm systems can be assessed;
- requirements and test methods against which the ability of components to be combined into an effective system can be assessed;
- guidelines for the incorporation and use of fire
detection and fire alarm systems into buildings or other construction works.
1.2 This series of standards applies to fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. It may also be used as a basis for the assessment of components of systems for other purposes, e.g. mines, ships; however, additional testing may be required.
It does not preclude the manufacture or use of systems having special characteristics suitable for the protection of
specified risks.
1.3 The system is required to function satisfactorily not only under the fire conditions, but also when exposed to conditions likely to be met in practice. The tests specified are intended to assess the performance of the components of the system under such conditions.
1.4 The performance of components is assessed from the results obtained in the specified tests and from their ability to
perform the required functions. This standard is not intended to place restrictions on the design or construction of
components other than those necessary for the performance of desired functions.
1.5 Where appropriate the standards may be applied to the
detection part of extinguishing systems (with the exception of sprinkler heads) although the sensitivity requirements may not be applicable to all cases.
1.6 The compliance of a component with the relevant part of EN 54 does not ensure that this component will necessarily function correctly when connected with another component also complying with the relevant part of EN 54 (e.g. control and indicating equipment with a fire detector), unless both components have been assessed together as satisfying the requirements for a system.
1.7 This series of standards does not cover the requirements
for self-contained smoke alarms (see 3.13).

1 Omfattning
1.1 Denna europeiska standardserie specificerar:
- krav, provningsmetoder och prestanda mot vilka effektivitet och tillförlit- lighet hos olika komponenter i branddetekterings- och brandlarmsystem kan bedömas
- krav och provningsmetoder mot vilka komponenters förmåga att kombineras till effektivt system kan bedömas
- riktlinjer för installation och användning av branddetekterings- och brandlarmsystem i byggnader eller andra byggnadsverk.
1.2 Standardserien tillämpas för branddetekterings- och brandlarmsystem för byggnader. Den kan också användas som underlag för att bedöma komponenter i system för andra miljöer, t.ex. gruvor, fartyg. I sådana fall kan dock tilläggsprovningar vara nödvändiga. Standarden utesluter inte tillverkning eller användning av system med speciella egenskaper avsedda för skydd av särskilda risker.
1.3 Systemet skall kunna fungera tillfredsställande inte bara i händelse av brand utan också när det utsätts för förhållanden vilka kan uppstå i verkligheten.
Avsikten med provningsmetoderna som beskrivs är att bedöma prestandan av systemets komponenter vid sådana förhållanden.
1.4 Komponenters prestanda bedoms från resultaten erhållna från specificerade provningar och från deras förmåga att utföra krävda funktioner. Standarden är inte avsedd att skapa begränsningar i utförande eller konstruktion, andra än sådana nödvändiga för utförandet av önskade funktioner.
1.5 I förekommande fall kan standarderna också tillämpas för släcksystems detektionsdelar (med undantag för sprinklerhuvuden) även om kraven på känslighet inte behöver vara tillämpbara i samtliga fall.
1.6 Att en komponent uppfyller kraven i aktuell EN 54-standard säkerställer inte att komponenten fungerar korrekt vid anslutning till annan komponent som också uppfyller kraven i aktuell EN 54-standard (t.ex. centralutrustning med branddetektor) om inte båda komponenterna bedömts tillsammans att uppfylla kraven för ett system.

2 Normative references

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this European Standard, the following definitions apply.
NOTE 1: The list of components of fire detection and fire alarm systems is not intended to be exclusive. Definitions for other components may be added in later revisions of this European Standard or by amendment when such components are produced.
NOTE 2: Additional definitions specific to individual parts are included in those parts.
3.1 fire detector (item A of figure 1): A component of a fire detection system which contains at least one sensor which
constantly or at frequent intervals monitors at least one suitable physical and/or chemical phenomenon associated with fire, and that provides at least one corresponding signal to the control and indicating equipment (see figure 1: item B of figure 1).
NOTE
1:The decision to give the alarm of fire or to
operate automatic fire protection equipment may be made at the detector or other component of the system, for example at the control and indicating equipment.
NOTE 2: Apart from those listed and their possible combinations, other types of detectors are conceivable.
Fire detectors may be differentiated in several ways. These may include:
- the phenomenon detected (see definitions 3.1.1 to 3.1.5);
- the way in which the detector responds to the phenomenon detected (see definitions 3.1.6 to 3.1.8);
- the configuration of the detector (see definitions 3.1.8 to 3.1.11);
- the resettability of the detector (see definitions 3.1.12 to 3.1.14);
- the detachability of the detector (see definitions 3.1.15 and 3.1.16);
- the type of signal transmitted (see definitions 3.1.17 to
3.1.19).

2 Bindande referenser

3 Definitioner
Följande definitioner används i standarden med här angiven innebörd:
ANM 1: Uppräkningen av komponenterna i branddetekterings- och brandlarmsystem gör inte gällande att vara helttäckande. Definitionsavsnittet för ytterligare komponenter kan bli kompletterad i senare revidering av denna standard eller genom tillagg när sådana komponenter produceras.
ANM 2: Tilläggsdefinitioner för enskilda delar har inkluderats i tillämplig EN 54-del.
3.1 branddetektor (A i figur 1): komponent i branddetekteringssystem som inne- håller åtminstone en sensor som konstant eller vid återkommande intervall övervakar minst ett fysiskt och/eller kemiskt brandfenomen och som överför åtminstone en motsvarande signal till centralutrustningen (B i figur 1)
ANM 1: Beslut om att avge brandlarm eller start av automatisk brandskyddsutrustning kan göras av detektorn eller av annan komponent, t ex centralutrustningen.
ANM 2: Bortsett från de uppräknade detektorerna och deras möjliga kombinationer, kan även andra typer av detektorer förekomma.
Branddetektorer kan särskiljas på många sätt, som t. ex.:
- detekterat fenomen (se 3.1.1 till 3.1.5)
- sättet detektorn reagerar på fenomenet (se 3.1.6 till 3.1.8) - detektorns konfiguration (se 3.1.9 till 3.1.11)
- detektorns återställbarhet (se 3.1.12 till 3.1.14) - om detektorn är jackbar (se 3.1.15 och 3.1.16) - typ av överförd signal (se 3.1.17 till 3.1.19).
