Even when you are not using your mobile device, it still sends and receives uplink and downlink signaling messages in order to be tracked and paged. Operating a mobile cellular network involves tackling two main problems in terms of these signaling messages. One problem is to reduce the total signaling overhead and the other one is to mitigate signaling congestion scenarios where there are many users behaving in a similar manner. The research in this dissertation mostly focuses on applying mathematical modeling and optimization to these two problems for Long Term Evolution networks.
