ABSTRACT

The title of the project,

Anthrop o cenarium, is a combination of the word Anthrop o cene and the latin suffix -arium. Anthrop o cene is a prop osed geological ep o que defined by a significant human impact on the planet. -Arium means a place asso ciated with a sp ecified thing. Put together, a place for the Anthrop o cene.

In its research phase the project

investigates the parasitic tendencies of human civilizations through the mining industr y in a territorial, regional and national scale. Eventually the research motivates an architectural program, a p olitical forum.

The program is intro duced to the site of a closed op en-pit- and underground mine in Tuolluvaara, Kiruna as the site ver y well emb o dies the topic of investigation. Extensive drawings of the mine b oth in plan and section showcase the spatiality of the mine b o dy that allows the project to fully explore the mines p otential. Through an analysis of these drawings as well as the site characteristics and context, a decision was made to lo cate the program within two sections that cuts through the two ver tical elevator shafts of the mine.

Each shaft consists of a tower as well as a ver tical tunnel that connects to a series of different levels b elow ground.

The design pro cess explores how the mine can b e reactivated as a p olitical forum an narrate an exp erience

that can feed a p olitical discussion connected to the topic.

The main architectural element intro duced is a new structure in wo o d that supp or ts the activities incorp orated within the p olitical forum. The program includes (from top down) a café that offer panoramic views, three exhibition levels that frame the city, the mine and nature, a set

of gardens, a lobby, two underground levels of conference spaces as well as an underground level that encompasses an auditorium and an area for fairs.

The project aims to b e a regional,

national, and mayb e even international platform dedicated to discussions and decisions regarding the mining industr y and ultimately the Anthrop o cene.

Organism - An individual animal, plant, or single- celled life form.

ARCHITECTURE IS A PERVERSION OF NATURE

Perversion - The changing of something so that it no longer is what it was or what it should be. Often regarded as a morbid or unhealthy progression.
