Diseases in the Hip

Exploring risk for fracture and osteoarthritis

Hip fracture is a major stressful event with high risk for morbidity, disability, and mortality. For the society it leads to high health care costs.

Osteoarthritis can also have a major impact, but total hip replacement and total knee replacement due to primary osteoarthritis are cost effective and have good prognosis. This thesis explores the relationship between hip fracture and psychosocial factors, and the relationship between hip fracture and osteoarthritis. The results reveal a higher risk for hip fracture after previous hip fracture in spouse, after death of spouse, and after total knee replacement, but a lower risk for hip fracture with the heavy loading occupation farming. Farmers also had a higher risk for total hip replacement.
