STOCKHOLM SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS

CAMPAIGN CONSULTATION DOCUMENT

T H E F U T U R E O F S S E I N O U R H A N D S

The Stockholm School of Economics is a small school but our impact on society is significant.

We are ranked as the leading business school in the Nordic region and an impressive number of managers, board members and societal influencers have a background from SSE. As the number of international students increases we are also contributing to an influential export of SSE graduates.

But this is not enough. My aim is to make sure that SSE uses its proud reputation and strong Swedish roots to reach to an even higher international position in business, economics and law.

My vision is that SSE becomes a

contemporary business school where brilliant minds from around the world meet to learn, exchange knowledge and create ideas. I want SSE to be a lively meeting place where students, researchers, companies and society work together to challenge established truths and push boundaries forward. I want SSE to be a place that gives brilliant young minds the freedom of

choice to impact the world and shape the future they want to experience.

To achieve this vision, we need your help.

In the following document we have outlined the future needs of SSE. I’d like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read about our challenges and opportunities, and think about how you, as an alum could contribute to the journey. Together, we can ensure that SSE continues to be an outstanding school, and at a new level.

We look forward to your feedback. Please get in touch with me if you have questions or concerns.

Lars Strannegård

President, Stockholm School of Economics

I have now been President for almost two years. It has been and is

a hard, stimulating, exciting and above all, energizing time. Working

at a higher education institution with such a proud history as ours is a

privilege that I enjoy every day. To prepare for the future and strengthen

the Stockholm School of Economics even further we are now planning

for upcoming developments.

For over a century, the Stockholm School of Economics has stood as an institution committed to advancing Swedish industry and educating the next generation of business leaders. Today, the increasingly intense worldwide competition in higher education is challenging SSE to

enhance our global perspective.

to strengthen our position as a world-class destination for international faculty and students.

Therefore, this campaign consultation document outlines a set of goals and potential investment opportunities that, with your partnership, can help SSE take the next step to becoming an international business school. We look forward to hearing your feedback on this document and to your further engagement in our plans.

Ever since opening our doors back in 1909,

SSE has striven to fulfil our mission in an ever- changing world. From humble beginnings, we now offer 11 programs from Bachelor’s degrees to Executive Education and Master’s degrees offered in English. Today, nearly 40%

of our international graduates stay and work in Sweden, contributing to the “brain gain” pushing Swedish industry forward.

As we step toward this bold future, we are mindful to uphold and develop the pillars that our past and present successes rest upon.

Academic excellence has always set SSE apart, and our recent Financial Times ranking as the

number one business school in the Nordics presents a solid base to build on.

Today, SSE attracts top students from all over the world. With nearly 40% of Master’s students coming from outside Sweden, we are able to provide a truly international learning experience, critical for when our students enter the global workforce.

Our renowned research capabilities are also setting high standards. Several SSE faculty members are recognized as leaders in their field and three have been appointed to the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences committee, in memory of Alfred Nobel.

O T H E R N O T A B L E A C C O L A D E S I N C L U D E :

• European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation, certifying our educational activities are of the highest international standards.

• Appointment to the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS), extended to SSE as the country’s leading business school.

• Appointment to the Partnership in International Management (PIM), a leading collaboration between top global business schools.

• Financial Times 12th place global ranking for our Master’s Program in Finance.

Over the years, SSE’s relevance as a business school has hinged upon our relationships with the business community and society at large. Since the beginning we have worked to involve the practical know-how of business leaders in the development of our school.

Today, more than 100 companies take part in our corporate partnership program and support research through financial contributions. Their engagement, through guest lectures, live cases and internships is immeasurable, allowing our students to apply their theoretical, research-based knowledge to real-life scenarios.

The direct impact of all this upon OMXS30 companies is clear, with 18% of executive management, 27% of board members and 41% of female board members all receiving degrees from SSE. Additionally 61% of SSE alumni reportedly start their own company during their career.

F U N D I N G C H A L L E N G E S Our future path is clear, but so too is the financial reality we are facing.

Only 20% of SSE’s total income comes from fixed government grants, which, due to budget constraints, is not likely to increase in the short-term.

We also receive no funding for our basic research activities and cannot charge tuition for EU students.

T H E C H A L L E N G E S W E F A C E

G L O B A L C O M P E T I T I O N As a result of the Bologna Process in 2007, higher education throughout Europe has become more standardized,

significantly increasing competition among higher education institutions. Therefore, not only do higher education institutions compete for the best students, but students also compete for the best jobs.

Maintaining our reputation of excellence demands that we build upon our strengths and position ourselves ever-more effectively for the future. SSE must enhance the student experience and provide scholarships to incentivize the highest quality international students to enrol. Additionally we must recruit and retain world-class faculty known for addressing local and global challenges.

The decision to launch a major fundraising initiative is not taken lightly.

These are critical times for SSE and we are confident that an investment now will advance our mission and vision, and strengthen our school’s future for decades to come.

Over the next several weeks, we will seek the perspective of the Stockholm School of Economics’ most committed alumni, friends and supporters. We thank you in advance for your time and insights.

This prospectus outlines a set of goals and investment opportunities that, with your partnership, can help SSE secure its rightful position as both a global leader in business education and an international benchmark for winning industry collaboration.

FA C I L I T I E S A N D A U D I T O R I U M R E N O VAT I O N : The four buildings that make up the SSE campus include two buildings on Saltmatargatan, one on Hollandargatan and the main building on Sveavagen.

Complete facility updates of all buildings are urgently needed to enrich the overall SSE educational experience and to remain truly competitive against the top international institutions.

In addition, we aim to renovate and upgrade the main SSE auditorium, where our key gatherings take place and where we host corporate partners, guest lecturers, panel discussions and speeches. Our ambition is to fully renovate the space, with new seating, flooring and the latest technology and sound features.

D I G I TA L L E A R N I N G :

Keeping pace with changing technology is crucial in today’s business environment. Our aim is to provide a state of the art digital learning experience that empowers connections between students and faculty and enables global education opportunities and collaborations with business communities. We seek support to develop pedagogical methods to integrate the learning into our curriculum, provide faculty support, and for new hardware and software tools for classrooms and lecture halls.

S S E A C H I E V E M E N T S C H O L A R S H I P S : Preparing future business leaders to think globally begins with a multi-cultural learning environment.

We are therefore seeking support to establish an endowment for a merit-based scholarship program to annually recruit and enrol four top international (non-EU) Masters students into all academic programs in perpetuity.

C A R E E R M A N A G E M E N T:

Our aim is for all SSE students to find employment within three months of graduation. In order for our students to stand out, we must upgrade our career management services and optimize interactions with potential employers. The work we need to undertake in this important area includes significant increases in career coaching, establishing online and interactive resources, delivery of skills training and personal and professional development courses.

There will be multiple opportunities for a broad range of alumni support to enhance the student experience by contributing to specific funds within each of the areas above, such as the seat naming program in the Auditorium, the Digital Learning Fund, and the Career Management Fund. Support from alumni through all levels of giving will make a significant impact in these particular areas.

E N H A N C I N G T H E S T U D E N T E X P E R I E N C E

Increasing the value of an SSE degree is the best platform for attracting the finest and the brightest students from around the world. Our ambition for enhancing the SSE student experience critically involves renovating our facilities, upgrading all classrooms with the latest digital technology, providing scholarships for top international students and offering

outstanding career support services.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND PROFESSORSHIPS:

Hiring and retaining the best faculty is an ongoing challenge. Funding to establish three new endowed professorships in Organizational Behaviour, Diversity Management and Economics, and two endowed professorships in Finance will help position SSE as an attractive destination for top faculty. These professorships will include naming opportunities that will last in perpetuity.

P H . D . S T U D E N T S U P P O RT:

Ph.D. students are an important element to SSE’s teaching and research, as they serve both as teaching assistants to Bachelor’s and Master’s students and conduct valuable research. However, SSE receives no state funding for our Ph.D. programs. Therefore, we aim to offer our Ph.D. students a competitive salary, allowing more time focused on research. An endowed fund of 300 million SEK will allow the school to fund 60 Ph.D. students for five years and attract the highest calibre students. The impact on research outputs and quality of teaching will be tangible and will underpin the strengthening of the School’s position internationally.

C H A I R S P O N S O R S H I P :

SSE has exceptional faculty whose research requires additional support. Therefore, we seek to provide opportunities for a donor or company to support areas of research that are close to their heart or to their corporate objective and to link their name to a chair position for a period of five or 10 years. Our goal is to raise funding for five current chairs.

R E S E A R C H S U P P O RT:

SSE is a lean institution with little extra support for faculty members, who balance teaching and research.

Providing additional resources to faculty members who are producing high-quality research will help attract even more additional external support.

P U B L I C AT I O N I N C E N T I V E S :

One indicator taken into consideration in university rankings is the number of publications produced by SSE faculty. Providing publication incentives to our faculty will encourage them to publish in prestigious journals, ultimately enhancing SSE’s reputation and under-pinning our critical drive to be a globally competitive business school.

There will be multiple opportunities for major gifts from alumni to support both the areas of Enhancing the Student Experience and, or Strengthening Teaching and Research which will have a significant impact. Additionally, there are clear opportunities for the generosity of donors who kindly choose to support SSE at an appropriate level to be honoured and acknowledged through naming opportunities associated in particular with Chairs, scholarships and facilities.

S T R E N G T H E N I N G T E A C H I N G A N D R E S E A R C H

From advancing business development in Sweden to preparing the next generation

of leaders to solving important social challenges, it is imperative that SSE continues

to recruit and retain exceptional educators and researchers amongst our faculty.
