There is a square
, a long and narrow space in the old city of Idris. It is warm and the sun gener- ously lets its shine fall everywhere, everywhere except in the blessing shadow of the respected mulberry tree. Bang, bang, there is a banging sound of a hammer towards a metal surface coming from one end of the square. There are actually lots of sounds, and lots of activities going on. People move across the square at different pace but in a constant flow. Some stop briefly and glance at the city map by the Tourist Information Centre, some sit down and drink a tea underneath the big tree.There is a package delivered, a brazen bowl being haggled over and another brazen oil lamp is being burnished with such intensity one might think the boy is expecting the Genius to appear. A group of students is showed around in one of the school workshops. A old man is washing his hands in the water by the small fountain and at the same time a few kids are making their way through one of the vaults of the Artisan’s House, towards the railing of the bridge, wanting to see the actual source of the water splashing sounds, the river.
The square is Place Lalla Yeddouna in the old Medina of Fez in Morocco. It has recently been the site in focus for a open international competition with the objective of regenerating the square and its neighbourhood. This thesis project propose a respond to the competition.
