Innehåll:
Why do we wear jewellery?
What does jewellery do, when worn on the body?
What kind of relations are activated through the wearing of jewellery?
These are some of the key questions that we will address, through making, in the course Smycke:
ämnesorienterat individuellt projekt 1.
The course explores the relationship between objects, materials and the human body, and researches the action of wearing jewellery both as private gesture and in the public realm.
As makers of jewellery we are expressing our ideas through the language of objects and materials:
how does that work? Furthermore, how is a jewellery piece participated and understood (by the viewer, the wearer, etc.)?
Through different assignments in the first two weeks of the course, through group activities, and through an individual jewellery project independently defined and developed by each student, we will investigate:
- How the meaning of an object is influenced by the placement on the body and by the ways it connects to it (how is it put on or attached, for example);
- The performative qualities of jewellery and materials;
- Histories and practices connected to the wearing of jewellery;
-
How we can use this knowledge to deepen our work and start positioning ourselves as artists/makers in relation to the contemporary jewellery landscape.Through subjective observations and reflections, hands-on experiments and making, each student will research how objects are perceived in relation to the human body and society, particularly how jewellery behaves and what are its most essential functions.
Syfte:
The course Smycke: ämnesorienterat individuellt projekt 1 aims for an understanding of the
complex relation between human body – object – material, through an investigation of the jewellery medium and of some of its manifold functions and histories. Each student is invited to form an independent understanding of jewellery’s potential and of the medium’s role in specific social contexts. Furthermore, students are invited to begin to define jewellery as relevant artistic medium in their practice.
Struktur:
The course will start with hands-on research in the first week and a half (workshop in w. 45-46), aimed at generating relevant material and observations that will support the formulation of an individual jewellery project. From here, each student will develop their project independently, and regularly discuss the progress of their projects with the teachers both in group and individual tutorials. A study trip and additional activities (i.e. seminars, lectures) are organised to offer further space for critical thinking and discussion.
Students will present their individual work, resolved both from a technical, material and concept point of view. Relevant documentation of the artistic process, and an overview of all that was produced during the course, will also be presented on the final presentation.
Active participation in group activities, discussions, study trip, and tutoring is a mandatory requirement of the course.
Examinationsform:
Ongoing presentation of the work process through tutoring with teachers. Active participation to workshop, seminars, study trip, and all activities planned in the course. Final presentation in which the student verbally presents a fully resolved artistic jewellery project/work. Together with the resolved project/work, also relevant parts of the process and documentation are presented, both verbally and in space, in the final presentation.
Literature:
• Introduction chapter, “Gender and jewelry: A feminist analysis”, Rebecca Ross Russell (2010)
• “Understanding surfaces: On Jewelry and Identity”, lecture transcript, 16.03.2014 at Pinakothek der Moderne Munich, Pravu Mazumdar
• “From Gemstones to Jewellery”, Roland Barthes, published in The language of Fashion, Bloomsbury (2013)
• “Jewellery in context – a multidisciplinary framework for the study of jewellery”, Marjan Unger. Arnoldsche (2020)
Additional reading material may be provided during tutoring to support the student’s individual process. A course bibliography with suggested additional reading will also be provided to all participants.
