Abstract

Title: Swedish Christmas celebration, A study of picturebooks from a social constructivistic perspective
Author: Jessica Edekling Ida Jonskog Tutor: Gunilla Albinsson
Abstract
The Bachelor’s essay seeks to draw from a social constructivistic perspective to describe and analyze how Christmas is produced in three picture books. We wanted to investigate how the Swedish Christmas celebration is portrayed in picture books with different focus and timing in relation to ethnological studies in the subject area. The picture books chosen are: Petters och Lottas jul by Elsa Beskow, Julgröten by Sven Nordqvist and Emilias jul by Anna Dunér and Kirsten Raagaard. The research questions within the essay are: “How is Christmas celebration portrayed in words och pictures in the picture books Petters och Lottas jul, Julgröten and Emilias jul, and which discourses can be identified?”, “What similarities and differences exist between the three presentations?” and “How do the discourses relate to ethnological studies that reflects the Swedish Christmas celebration from the late 1800s until the 2000s?”. In relation to the purpose of the essay we chose The Social Construction of Reality that Peter L.
Berger and Thomas Luckmann represent as theory. In order to analyze the picture books we used the qualitative method of discourse analysis which focuses on analyzing text to identify patterns, themes and discourses. In addition, we used Gustaf Cavallius method for analyzing, Bilderbok och bildanalys, in the essay to be able to examine the picture and its relation to the text. In the preparing of the material there crystallized six discourses: Christmas preparations, Christmas celebrations with family, relatives and other loved ones, deliverer of Christmas packages, meals during Christmas, Christmas decorations, as well as religion and folklore.
These discourses were elected because they combined portray the Swedish Christmas celebrations in the picture books. In the results we first analyzed the books pictures separately and then we analyzed them together with the text. The analysis shows that there are both similarities and differences between the picture books descriptions of Christmas celebrations and in relation to the ethnological studies. One observation is that the oldest and the newest picture book have the most in common, particularly with regard to the preparations, the religious elements, and the generosity that is reflected in the celebration of Christmas. Our conclusion is that traditions are constantly changing through additions of new features while elements with no function disappear. Picture books and other narrative forms are throughout history and still today a source of socialization of traditions, knowledge and norms.
