How does one attack such complex issues as are presented in architecture? Questions that can never be taken out of their greater context and that effects so many people. How does one plan for an unknown future?
Slakthusområdet is a place with a unique character that cannot be found anywhere else in Stockholm. Part of that character comes from that within the well-defined limits the area has evolved over time with building from all parts of the 20th century standing next to each other. The different activities in the buildings have changed and so has the buildings with them.
A lot of today’s architecture is presented with catchy slogans and diagrams presenting a simplified view of what the problems faced actually are. The solutions, no matter how well presented, will always be as simplified as the questions. No consideration is taken for the unknown. That which the architects mind will not think of in advance.
I have tried to find a different approach. A more exuberant way of testing different solutions before I have even defined what the question is. Knowingly subjective and naïve. As I slowly approached the end of the project I have also slowly begin to see where I have been heading. A building that offers a multitude of different spaces and locations for a different people of different needs to study and learn. A building with its one character but the possibility to change as the needs in the building change.
