Dear Mikael Oscarsson,
Our family is deeply concerned by new research findings released in recent months in the case of our relative, the Swedish diplomat Raoul G. Wallenberg. We are particularly troubled by indications that Swedish authorities apparently as early as 1946 made a conscious decision to abandon Raoul Wallenberg to his fate, even when there was information that he was alive and imprisoned in the Soviet Union. Even worse, it appears that key Swedish Foreign Ministry officials quietly accepted not only that Raoul Wallenberg may not be located or released (if imprisoned), but also decided that even if he were alive, he could not – and perhaps should not – be saved.
Our family has now lived with this tragedy for four generations. 76 years after our uncle’s disappearance in Budapest in January 1945, we still do not know why he was abducted, what exactly happened to him, and why he did not receive the determined help he deserved as a Swedish citizen and diplomat from his own government.
The Swedish government has honored Raoul Wallenberg for his humanitarian spirit and the extraordinary courage he displayed in Hungary during WWII, when he – together with a network of aides, fellow diplomats and members of the Hungarian resistance – managed to save the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews. Nonetheless, his own country has also grievously failed him.
Through the years, Raoul’s parents, Maj and Fredrik von Dardel, our grandparents were mostly met by silence from the Swedish authorities. Already in 1946, Maj instinctively knew that something was terribly wrong about the way Swedish officials dealt with the case of her son. She repeatedly decried their lack of enthusiasm and considered their approach “cold blooded”. However, in the end she was powerless and had no evidence to prove her suspicions.
After more than seven decades, it is time that the remaining serious questions about Raoul Wallenberg’s fate are fully addressed, also in Sweden. The new findings now provide added urgency to this quest. The new insights are challenging many long-held assumptions as well as some of the conclusions reached by earlier official investigations. In particular, they are leading to a reevaluation of the role of several key figures in the Wallenberg case, including that of the controversial Swedish Ambassador to Moscow (1944-46), Staffan Sőderblom, as well as that of Sverker Åstrőm, one of Sweden’s top diplomats in the post-war era, who is suspected of having functioned as a Soviet asset throughout his long career.
A few months ago, we again petitioned the Swedish Security Police to release all information about Mr. Åstrőm. His affiliations must be fully clarified since he was directly involved with the Wallenberg case for more than 60 years.
76 years after Raoul Wallenberg’s disappearance in Hungary, and nine years after Mr. Åstrőm’s death, Swedish authorities should disclose once and for all if the allegations against one of Sweden’s leading diplomats were true or false.
Our family and the Swedish public needs to know what exactly was behind Sweden's extreme passivity and how these attitudes affected the official handling of our uncle’s disappearance, in 1946 and also in later years. In particular, we need full clarity if and how any of these factors impacted the official investigation of the Raoul Wallenberg case during the 1990s and
2000s. There are strong indications that both Swedish and Russian officials intentionally kept the focus of the Wallenberg investigation very narrow, misrepresented and omitted important details and information in the case from their respective official reports, and failed to provide access to key documentation to researchers and our family.
As a result, we are calling for a new, independent inquiry into the full reasons for these misrepresentations and omissions in both Russia and Sweden and the continued failure to solve Raoul Wallenberg fate. In particular, we as that the Swedish Parliament issue a formal request to the Swedish government to conduct an impartial examination and evaluation of all new information and pending questions.
At the same time, the Swedish Foreign Ministry should make a determined representation in Russia and insist on the truth about its missing diplomat. Swedish officials need to urgently request the release of crucial documentation known to exist in Russian archives.
We are convinced that decisive action by Swedish officials, in combination with an independent review of the new research findings, will mark a significant step on the long road to justice for Raoul Wallenberg.

Vår familj är djupt oroad över nya forskningsresultat som släppts de senaste månaderna i fallet med vår släkting, den svenska diplomaten Raoul G. Wallenberg. Vi är särskilt bekymrade över indikationer på att svenska myndigheter, tydligen redan 1946, fattade ett medvetet beslut att överge Raoul Wallenberg till sitt öde, trots att det fanns information om att han levde och satt fängslad i Sovjetunionen. Vad värre är, det verkar som att vissa svenska tjänstemän i UD inte bara accepterade att Raoul Wallenberg inte skulle kunna lokaliseras eller släppas (om han satt fängslad), men också beslutade att ifall han levde så kunde han inte - och kanske inte heller borde - räddas.
Vår familj har nu levt med denna tragedi i fyra generationer. 76 år efter vår farbrors
försvinnande i Budapest i januari 1945 vet vi fortfarande inte varför han blev bortförd, vad som hände med honom och varför han inte fick den beslutsamma hjälp han förtjänade som svensk medborgare och som diplomat från sin egen regering.
Den svenska regeringen har hedrat Raoul Wallenberg för sin humanitära anda och det
extraordinära mod han visade i Ungern under andra världskriget, när han - tillsammans med en grupp av assistenter, diplomater och medlemmar av det ungerska motståndet - lyckades rädda tiotusentals liv på ungerska judar. Oavsett detta har hans eget land också allvarligt svikit honom.
Genom åren möttes Raouls föräldrar, Maj och Fredrik von Dardel, våra farföräldrar mestadels av tystnad från de svenska myndigheterna. Redan 1946 visste Maj instinktivt att något var fel med hur svenska tjänstemän hanterade sin sons fall. Hon fördömde upprepade gånger bristen på entusiasm och betraktade deras tillvägagångssätt som ”kallblodigt”. Till slut var hon dock maktlös och hade ingen möjlighet att påvisa sina farhågor.
Efter mer än sju decennier är det dags att till fullo granska de återstående allvarliga frågorna om Raoul Wallenbergs öde, även i Sverige. De nya forskningsresultaten ger anledning att
påskynda denna granskning. Nya insikter ger också anledning att ifrågasätta flera tidiga antaganden samt några av slutsatserna som dragits i tidigare utredningar. I synnerhet leder dessa till en omvärdering av flera nyckelpersoners roll i Wallenberg-ärendet, inklusive den kontroversiella svenska ambassadören i Moskva (1944–46) Staffan Söderblom. Detta gäller även Sverker Åström, en av Sveriges toppdiplomater i efterkrigstiden, som misstänks för att har gått Sovjetunionens ärenden under sin långa karriär.
För några veckor sedan framställde vi återigen en begäran till den svenska säkerhetspolisen att offentliggöra all information om Sverker Åström. Hans olika kopplingar måste göras
transparanta eftersom han var direkt involverad i Wallenberg-ärendet i mer än 60 år.
76 år efter Raoul Wallenbergs försvinnande i Ungern och nio år efter Åströms bortgång bör svenska myndigheter bekräfta definitivt om anklagelserna mot en av Sveriges ledande diplomater är riktiga eller ej.
Vår familj och den svenska allmänheten behöver veta vad som låg bakom Sveriges extrema passivitet och hur olika personers förhållningssätt påverkade den officiella hanteringen av vår farbrors försvinnande, dels för året 1946 men även för senare år. I synnerhet behöver vi klarhet i om, och i så fall hur, någon av de nämnda faktorerna kan ha påverkat den officiella
utredningen av Raoul Wallenberg-ärendet under 1990- och 2000-talet. Det finns starka indikationer på att man både från svensk och rysk sida avsiktligen lät fokus för Wallenberg- utredningen utformas mycket snävt, att man förvanskat eller utelämnat viktiga detaljer och information i sina respektive officiella rapporter, och att man misslyckats med att ge tillgång till nyckeldokumentation till forskare och vår familj.
Som ett resultat kräver vi en ny, oberoende utredning om de fullständiga orsakerna till att information förvanskats eller utelämnats både i Ryssland och Sverige, samt bakgrunden till den uteblivna framgången när det gäller att lösa Raoul Wallenbergs öde. I synnerhet ber vi att Sveriges riksdag lämnar en formell begäran till den svenska regeringen om att göra en opartisk granskning och utvärdering av all ny information och samtliga utestående frågor.
Samtidigt bör det svenska utrikesministeriet göra en tydlig framställan i Ryssland och insistera på transparens kring Sveriges försvunna diplomat. Svenska tjänstemän torde snarast begära att viktiga handlingar, vilka man vet finns i ryska arkiv, släpps.
Vi är övertygade om att beslutsamma åtgärder från svenska tjänstemän, i kombination med en oberoende granskning av de nya forskningsresultaten, kommer att resultera i att ett
betydelsefullt steg kan tas på den långa vägen till rättvisa för Raoul Wallenberg.
