Dessa drängar och pigor var ofta unga och ogifta. Idealt skulle de vara som husbondens barn. De skulle lyda och arbeta, husbonden skulle skydda och leda.

Denna studie handlar om dessa drängar och pigors vardagsliv. Genom Stockholms tänkeböcker åren 1600 till 1635 kartläggs tjänstehjonens arbete och relationen mellan dem och deras husbönder. Även deras relationer utanför hushållet kartläggs: vilka de umgicks, uppvaktade, slogs och bråkade med i staden.

Genom berättelser om brott, tragedier och övergrepp pusslas en annan berättelse ihop, en berättelse om vardagens slitsamma lunk. Studien ger en bild av hur livet för den som levde sitt liv i underordning kunde te sig i det tidiga 1600-talet.
