SSE MSc Mentor Program 2015/16

SSE invites you to take part in the 2015/16 Mentor Program for MSc students.

Mentors for the SSE MSc Mentor Program typically have at least seven years of professional experience, including leadership responsibility.

They represent a broad range of career paths and experiences, including general management roles and expert roles, as well as academic backgrounds in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management and Marketing. The corporate sector as well as the non-profit and entrepreneurial sectors are included.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR

Participating in the program as a mentor has wide- reaching benefits for mentors, as well as for their organizations. These include:

• Leadership Skills Development: The SSE MSc Mentor Program can help you develop or enhance “mento- ring” skills of great value to your own leadership pro- gression. This includes active listening, creative pro- blem solving, giving and getting feedback and collaborative coaching.

• Access to an outstanding talent pool.

• The gratification of working with passionate young people.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTEE

Taking part in the program as a student is a unique chance to benefit from the experience of the extensive SSE network. You will be able to discuss your career choices and get some invaluable advice. However, being a mentee comes with a responsibility. You are expected to be engaged and driven to get the most out of the mentoring. It’s important that you take initiative to book meetings and remind the mentor when it’s time to schedule an appointment. The mentors are extremely busy people, their time is valuable and we ask that you respect this in order to make the mentor meetings successful.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF MSC MENTOR PROGRAM

• SSE has a very strong alumni network.

• To improve the career support available to our MSc students, we want to leverage our alumni.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The time commitment for being a mentor to a MSc student is expected to be four meetings during the aca- demic year. The meetings can take place at your office, at SSE or at the location of your choice. In addition, there will be a kick-off event at the start of the pro- gram, where you will get some useful tips on how to get the most out of the mentoring experience and get the opportunity to meet with other mentors and mentees.

There are no “required hours”- as with all important relationships, it is the quality, rather than the quantity, that makes a difference. The responsibility for buil- ding and maintaining a successful relationship rests with both the mentor and student.

MENTORING ACROSS BORDERS

Our SSE virtual meeting room enables mentor rela- tions across borders. SSE welcomes alumni based internationally to take part as mentors in the program aswell. SSE also encourages MSc students who are on exchange year to participate as a mentee.

A MENTORSHIP RELATIONSHIP IS:

• Professional

• Voluntary

• Equal

• An ongoing process that requires commitment of both parties
