Conclusions from the previous course evaluation

This year some lectures and exercises had to be done digitally due to the Corona pandemic.

However, most of the education was done on site and most things worked as planned.

The final exam that is now is done digitally with Inspera worked fine and the students seems to be used to this platform now. We doubled the laboratory space this year and that was good since it made the work environment better, although it increased the costs. A minor in the schedule made it difficult to come in time for the Gene expression seminar and this will be adjusted to next year.

Description of conducted changes since previous course occasion

The major changes done this year was the upgrading for the Gene expression seminar with

“Padlet”. The upgrading was done in a KI sponsored course development project with UoL and other course leaders from the Biomedicine programs. For the wet lab we increased the laboratory space to avoid crowding and make a better work environment. In the

Bioinformatics part we added a new lecture on analysis of genomics data since there is an increased need for such knowledge in this field of science. We also developed new course survey questions to evaluate digital labs and this is a part of an Erasmus project to develop digital teaching at universities.

Method(s) for student influence

We had one schedule course council meeting with the course representatives and use web survey at the end of the course. Before and during the course we had interactions with the course representatives. During the course we meet the students a lot during lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and discussions etc, and there the students can influence the course. Students can also email the course leader or the teachers responsible for specific parts of the course.

Summary of the students’ response to the course valuation

95% of the students answered that they to a large or very to a large extent had developed valuable expertise/skills during the course and 71% gave the overall grade ”good” or ”very good” to the course.

The course coordinator’s reflections on the implementation and results of the course

The additions and changes made to the course done this year was appreciated. These included an upgrading of the seminar, addition of one more Labster virtual lab module and a new bioinformatics lecture. The increase in space for the wet lab was also good since this year all students did the lab since we did not have reduced number of students as last year due to Corona restrictions.

Description of how the course works with quality, research-basis and collaboration with other professions

All lecturers encouraged to take pedagogic courses. A lot of pedagogical and course development is done together with the Biomed program committee, were we have monthly meetings and seminars. In addition, specific projects on topics such as feedback,

bioinformatics and wet labs for the biomedical education has been carried out during the year. The connection to research is very strong since all lectures are active scientists and we have also keynote lectures with selected successful scientists ending each part of the course.

The main interaction with other professions are with Core facility staff, doing genomics and bioinformatics analysis, and medical doctors and geneticists in clinical genetics.

Course coordinator’s conclusions and suggestions for improvement Most things work fine with the course since it has been continuously optimised for many years. Some changes will be done in the schedule to reduce the work load the first week and also make more time between the lab sessions and the seminar because many students had difficult to finish the lab in time and be in time for the seminar. We will rent an extra laboratory for the wet-lab this year too, since this made the laboratory work environment better. For the Bioinformatics part one lecture will be moved to be before the computer labs We will also reintroduce the exercises in medical genetics, since these cancelled due to the pandemic last year and the year before.

Views on the course and improvement suggestions from others

Students suggested fewer lectures the first week and we will move some to later during the course. Some minor changes in the schedule has been suggested and will be done.

Description of how the course valuation has provided feedback internally and to the students

The course evaluation has been sent to responsible teachers and discussed at meetings for planning the next course. The course valuation is also available on Canvas for students and teachers to view.
