New results in target space geometry of non-linear sigma models
Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:20 (20 minutes)
Recent work on N=(2,2) non-linear sigma models with only semi-chiral fields will be discussed. Imposing additional N=(4,4) supersymmetry gives constraints on the target space geometry which we analyze. This is done both in the special case of linear transformations and 4-dimensional target space, as well as in the general case.

On thermodynamics of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory
Friday, 26 March 2010 12:20 (20 minutes)
Recently, great progress has been made on understanding the field theory side of the AdS(4)/CFT(3) duality. The
so-called ABJM theory, which is an N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory, has been conjectured to describe the world-volume theory on an arbitrary number of M2-branes. We discuss thermal properties of ABJM theory, by computing quantum corrections to the free energy. We find that in weakly coupled ABJM theory on R(2) × S(1), the leading correction is non-analytic in the ’t Hooft coupling. We derive a precise formula for the correction. The free energy can be expressed in terms of the scalar thermal mass, which is generated by screening effects. We show that this mass vanishes to 1-loop order. We then go on to 2-loop order where we find a finite and positive mass squared. Our results are consistent with the free energy being a monotonic function in the coupling constant which
interpolates smoothly to the intriguing Nˆ(3/2) behaviour at strong coupling, where the entropy is strongly suppressed.

General Semi-Direct Gauge Mediation
Friday, 26 March 2010 16:20 (20 minutes)
From 0912.0743: We give a general formulation of semi-direct gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking where the messengers interact with the hidden sector only through a weakly gauged group. Using this general formulation, we provide an explicit proof that the MSSM gaugino masses are vanishing to leading order in the gauge couplings. On the other hand, the MSSM sfermion masses have, generically, a non-vanishing leading contribution. We discuss how such a mechanism can successfully be combined with other mediation schemes which give tachyonic sfermions, such as sequestered anomaly mediation and some direct gauge mediation models.
