Qualification as a nurse and admitted to Study Programme in Specialist Nursing

Objectives

The aim of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge of the origin, transmission, diagnostics and treatment of cancer diseases. Furthermore, the student should have knowledge about commonly applied treatment methods in cancer disease.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- Explain tumour development/carcinogenesis - Explain symptoms that indicate a cancer disease - Explain diagnostic methods

Explain classification and the distinction of stages of cancer

- Explain the different phases of the cancer disease and treatment intentions - Report on and explain treatment methods and their adverse reactions - Explain mental reactions in patients with a cancer disease

- Commonly occurring cancer diseases - Methods for diagnostics and treatment - Psychosocial oncology

Teaching methods

Studies take place according to the LäraNära concept implying active learning independently or in collaboration with others interleaved with the course meetings, including i.a. seminars and presentations.

Self-assessments, problem-solving, own reflection and analysis of situations are included in the concept.

Läranära consists of a computer program distributed as a cd-rom or on Internet. It is connected to a web server, where information is collected. Work in groups and active participation in seminars and

attendance at all scheduled group meetings is compulsory. For carrying out the course, access to a computer (PC) with Internet connection is assumed.

Examination

For each study group, two compulsory course gatherings, each of about a day, are organised . For participation in a course meeting, previous assignments should be approved. Active participation in the meetings is required for a pass.grade The grading system is Failed/Passed/Passed with distinction.

At Karolinska Institutet a student is entitled to a total of 6 examinations per course to get passed. Student without approved results after 3 examinations have the right to re-take the course once. However, at most 6 examinations.
