Specific entry requirements
Admitted to the Study Programme in Specialist Nursing- Pediatric Care.
Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients' confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.
Objectives
The general aims of the course are that the student should achieve skills to with a professional attitude independently be able to carry out and lead nursing within healthcare for children and youth.
Caring in Specific Module 1: Nursing at specific diseases in children and adolescents, 7.5 credits
Diseases among Children and Adolescents, 7.5 been credits On completion of this module, the student should be able to;

Knowledge and understanding
- analyse and explain symptom and treatment at children and adolescents in different somatic and mental diseases
- identify and analyse nursing needs at complex diseases and at terminal care
- show knowledge and understanding of improvement-, development and current research within the paediatric nursing
Skill and ability
- demonstrate the ability to prioritise, initiate, carry out and evaluate nursing actions at complex diseases considering the patient's developmental stage, the situation of the family, the cultural background and a possible gender perspective.
- demonstrate the ability to integrate the nursing process by analysing assess argue too and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations also with limited information

- in collaboration with patient and family, and independent and interprofessional, be able to identify and analyse complex nursing needs within the paediatric healthcare
- demonstrate the ability on a communicative, care pedagogical, and patient safe working method considering the patient's developmental stage
- show on readiness to argue for, plan and carry out studies and treatments and evaluate and document these
- show on scientific precision in analysis and written text Judgement ability and approach
- analyse and reflect on evidence-based, person-oriented and patient safety and quality care within nursing and values of relevant research
- demonstrate the ability to from UN's children's convention and social- and ethical aspects hold a holistic attitude within the paediatric nursing
- demonstrate the ability to introspection relevant to the professional practice, and stand up for basic values
Content
The course consists of two parts:
Caring in Specific Diseases among Children and Adolescents, 7.5 hp - pediatrics and nursing within neonatology, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, paediatric emergency and paediatric- and adolescent psychiatry
- caring sciences, the nursing process and documentation - nutrition, fluid balance, pharmacology and drug processing - pain physiology, pain estimation and analgesia methods
- communication in connection with studies and treatments
- talk and treatment of children, youth and family and a cultural and gender perspectives - supports in connection with crisis reactions
- ethical principles including concepts part, autonomy and integrity Clinical Training in Paediatric - application, analysis and reflection of nursing related to the nursing process and Nursing, 7.5 hp
documentation
- communication with children, adolescents and family - application of pain estimation and analgesia methods - drug processing and fluid balance and nutrition
- management of technical equipment for children and youth related to the individual child's nursing and according to safety precautions
- leadership and nursing supervision are applied
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative view on learning where the working methods give precondition because the student takes responsibility for his learning actively. The working methods that are used are introductory lectures and student-activating teaching- and working methods (individual, in groups and as seminars). For individual studies, work in groups and seminars come web-based support for information and communication (PingPong) to be used.
Work in groups, active participation in seminars and attendance at all scheduled group meetings are compulsory. The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in
compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Under the placement, supervision, interprofessional training and reflection are included individually and/or in groups.
Examination
Module 1: Nursing at specific diseases in children and adolescents, 7.5 credits
- The component has four partial examinations consisting of project groups with peer learning, individual work and peer review, based on patient cases and specific issues. The final examination consists of self evaluation (self assessment) where the student reviews critically and reflects over his own knowledge acquisition based on learning objectives and the specific knowledge fields and peer review of the profession in specialist nursing.
Module 2: Placement within paediatrics, 7.5 credits
- Assessed Placement according to Evaluation form for placement.
- The component has five partial examinations consisting of individual learning outcomes for the
placement learning, patient case reflections, interprofessional learning and clinical assessment. The final examination consists of a patient observation at the placement and self evaluation (self assessment) where the student reviews critically and reflects over his own knowledge acquisition in relation to learning objectives and the placement learning.
The student should have satisfied the requirements for parts that are included to receive passed in the course as a whole.
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. A student without approved results after three completed examinations may be offered the opportunity to retake a module or course once more. This is subject to availability

If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination. A home examination that has been opened via the learning management system counts as an examination session even if the examination is not submitted. Late submissions of examinations are not accepted. Students who have not submitted on time are referred to re-examination.
The placement is compulsory, equivalent 16/32 hours a week. During the placement, a continuous assessment of the students'achievements takes place. My and final assessment should be carried out.
Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. At risk for failure of student, a written plan should be established latest at the half-time assessment of responsible teacher together with professional supervisors.
Failed clinical education may be done once more.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.
Transitional provisions
If a student has not accomplished a course, the student has the possibility to be examined according to the previous syllabus and the reading list, up to two years after the change of the syllabus and the reading list.
Other directives
The course evaluation takes place according to guidelines established by the Board of Education.
The course may not be included in a higher education qualification at the same time with the overview and passed course whose contents completely or partly corresponds to the course content. The following course is completely overlapping: 9BU008 Nursing within paediatrics, 15 credits
