Specific entry requirements

Standardised admission requirements E.1.

Objectives

After the course, the student should: 1) describe and apply methods for examination of binocular functions, and be able to analyse the results 2) describe and apply methods for examination of contrast sensitivity, and be able to analyse the results 3) describe and apply methods for examination of foris and be able to analyse the results 4) apply communicative tools for medical history taking 5) list, describe, measure and analyse myopia in relation to the patient's age and expected the capacity, 6) carry out and then analyse the results of a complete refractioning in a test frame and foropter with a routine adapted to the patient's visual defect, vision and mental capacity, 7) describe and apply methods for static

retinoscopy for determining different visual defects.

Content

The course contains the following parts: binocular vision and keratometry (seen in relation to previous

courses), contrast sensitivity, medical history, clinical methodology for measuring phoria, myopia, refraction in foropter and test frame, patient routines and static retionoscopy. Each student should also auscultate 1 day in an optometric practice - this placement are arranged by the students themselves. The course starts with self-study and continues with exercises, theoretical overview and demonstrations. The theoretical overview is made through different tuition forms (Case methodology, whole-group lectures etc). The students are given a possibility to train practical skills but must take a great responsibility themselves. The course is divided in three parts: 1) Mandatory attendance - 1 credit (Mandatory

attendance - 1 ECTS credit). Mandatory attendance comprises attendance in mandatory demonstrations, laboratory sessions and auscultations. 2) Theoretical understanding - 2.5 credits (Theoretical

understanding - 2 ECTS credits). Comprises a theoretical understanding and application of the

subject-specific contents of the course. 3) Practical work - 2.5 credits (Practical work - 2 ECTS credits).

Includes the ability to carry out retinoscopy and keratometry.

Mandetory attendence, 1.0 hp

Grading scale: UG

Compulsory attendance includes attendance at compulsory demonstrations, test, laboratory sessions, seminars, study visits and at practical/clinical exercises.

Theoretical understanding, 2.5 hp

Grading scale: UV

Including theoretical understanding and renewal of the topic-specific contents of the course.

Practical work, 2.5 hp

Grading scale: UV

Included the ability to carry out clinical methodology. See separately document for criteria at practical test.

Teaching methods

The course comprises self-study, demonstrations, laboratory sessions, theoretical overviews (in the form of lectures, seminars, Case methods, practical exercises), auscultations and written assignments.

Examination

The examination comprises: 1) Mandatory attendance. 2) Written/Oral examination. Examines the aims 1 to 7. 3) Practical tests, retinoscopy and keratometry. Examines the aims 6 and 7. In the part Mandatory attendance, attendance in demonstrations, seminars, laboratory sessions and auscultations is required. in case of absence, measures to be taken are discussed with the course director. The part is graded

according to the scale Fail/Pass. The part Theoretical understanding is examined through written/oral examinations. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction. For admission to the examination in Theoretical understanding, is required that supplementation of the part Mandatory attendance, is completed. The part Practical work is examined through a practical test in retinoscopy and keratometry. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction. The whole course is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction. For a Pass grade in the course, a Pass grade is required for all its parts. For a Pass with distinction, a Pass in part 1 and a Pass with distinction in parts 2 and 3 are required. Criteria for evaluating the parts of the course are determined in separate documents. When a student fails an examination, there will be an opportunity for a new examination.

All in all, 6 opportunities for a new examination are provided for all parts
