Eftersom det inte finns en tydlig och enhetlig definition om existentiell smärta, anser litteraturstudiens författare att det behövs forskning där man kan få fram en enhetlig definition som accepteras av omsorgspersonalen. Förlag på sådan forskning är att utföra kvalitativa studier där patienterna och omsorgspersonalen får berätta om sina
upplevelser kring begreppet ”existentiell smärta”, eller att utföra en kvantitativ studie där uppfattningar jämförs och utifrån det utveckla en enhetlig definition som beskriver den existentiella smärtan. Förutom forskning anser litteraturstudiens författare att det krävs öppna diskussioner och bredare utbildning om existentiell smärta och behov både
i utbildning och arbetsplats. Det för att ämnet inte ska vara lika främmande som det visas vara idag.
Slutsats
Det är viktigt att omsorgspersonal fokuserar på alla dimensioner vid vårdandet av patienten som fysiskt, socialt, psykiskt, existentiellt för att ge så god omvårdnad som möjligt. Både patienter och omsorgspersonal beskriver att existentiell smärtan behöver mer uppmärksamhet och att det ingår i sjuksköterskans ansvar att kunna hjälpa
patienterna med sina existentiella frågor och behov. Miljö, god relation, lyhördhet leder till bra samtal som hjälper patienterna att skapa hopp, acceptans, mening som i sin tur leder till lindring av den existentiella smärtan.
