Traditionen finns stark inom sjuksköterskans yrke, såväl i vårdandet som i sättet att lära. Fortsatt forskning bör initieras där omvårdnadens kultur och sjuksköterskans unika varande i denna kultur studeras utifrån kraven om att arbetet skall baseras på vetenskap och beprövad erfarenhet. Andra viktiga områden för fortsatta studier är ”att vara sjuksköterskestudent” och ”vägen till professionell sjuksköterska”, där utbildningens och vårdens kultur fokuseras. Forskningen indikerar att det finns en viss diskrepans mellan sjuksköterskors tanke och handling. Det skulle vara intressant att genom observationsstudier av sjuksköterskors handlande och varande i kombination med sjuksköterskors berättelser av olika omvårdnadssituationer försöka fånga och belysa denna diskrepans.

Instrumentet för att mäta sjuksköterskors inställning till omvårdnadsforskning behöver utvecklas, ytterligare testas och analyseras. Intresse för instrumentet har visats såväl nationellt som internationellt. Ett samarbete har påbörjats med Mc Master University, Hamilton, Ontario, Kanada om den engelska versionen. Det skulle vara av intresse att genomföra en nordisk studie om sjuksköterskors inställning till och medvetenhet om omvårdnadsforskning, för att se om det föreligger några kulturella skillnader. En sådan studie skulle också kunna kombineras med kvalitativa studier inriktade på professionell medvetenhet och hur den omsätts i det dagliga sjuksköterskearbetet. De något motstridiga resultaten om god skattning av kompetens i relation till vad som framkommer i andra studier om självaktning är av intresse att ytterligare studera.
