Enligt kompetens beskrivning för legitimerad barnmorskan bör arbetet utgår utifrån vetenskaplig evidens och beprövad erfarenhet samt efter PM, regionala och nationella riktlinjer. För att vårdande under amning ska utvecklas till evidensbaserad vård, behövs mer kunskap om upplevelse av amnngssvårigheter från kvinnor som lider av postpartum depression. Fördjupande studier om hur vårdandet kan stärka amningsupplevelsen behövs.
