På grund av svårigheterna beträffande generalisering och signifikansberäkning i denna undersökning önskas självklart en studie med liknande upplägg men fler deltagare och ett representativt urval. För att ytterligare öka resultatets styrka skulle en egen kontrollgrupp, och bättre metoder för beräkning av BMR och PAL, vara användbara. Utifrån detta skulle det vara intressant att göra hypotestest, men även att söka korrelationer mellan till exempel
energiintag, justerat BMI och amputationsomfattning, samt mikronutrientsintag och
amputationsomfattning. En sådan studie skulle ha möjlighet att bland annat bidra med många ledtrådar till att förstå orsakssambanden bakom viktuppgång efter amputation.
Mycket av den forskning som i dagsläget finns rörande amputerades hälsa baseras på amputerade krigsveteraner, vilket är en grupp som urskiljer sig bland annat beträffande förekomst av post-traumatisk stress (Abeyasinghe, de Zoysa, Bandara, Bartholameuz & Bandara, 2012). Det skulle därför vara relevant att bedriva mer forskning på andra grupper av amputerade för eventuellt mer rättvisande resultat. Då området är relativt outforskat och populationen är liten, skulle också en kvalitativ undersökning vara värdefull, kanske i form av djupintervjuer om hur ätande och val av mat påverkas av en amputation.
Som nämndes i diskussionsavsnittet, hade det varit av intresse att undersöka kostintag under det första året efter amputation, samt bland amputerade över 64 år. Det hade också varit relevant att undersöka fördelning av makronutrienter, fettkvalitet och mängd kostfiber och sackaros på grund av potentiell relevans för risk för hjärt-kärlsjukdom (Siri-Tarino & Krauss, 2016).
Under arbetet med uppsatsen har många kunskapsluckor bland viktig bakgrundsinformation kring amputation identifierats. Exempelvis skulle genomsnittligt BMR och totalt energibehov jämfört med icke-amputerade behöva undersökas närmare och siffror för beräkning av MET- och PAL-nivåer bland amputerade skulle behöva fastställas. Många av studierna, som hittades genom litteratursökningen, fokuserade framförallt på benamputerade. Mer forskning kring viktförändringar och eventuellt förändrad energiförbrukning skulle behöva göras även på armamputerade.
