Framtida forskning

Uppsatsen syftar till att uppnå ökad förståelse för hur utrikespolitiska beslut kan förklaras. För att göra den utrikespolitiska analysen hanterbar valdes en aspekt av utrikespolitiskt beslutsfattande: att undersöka varför en stat beslutar sig för att tillgripa våld mot en annan stat. För att undersökningen inte enbart skulle bli teoretiserande testades realismens teorier om externa hot och konstruktivismens teorier om idéers påverkan på politiken på det empiriska exemplet USA:s användning av militärt våld mot Irak.

Mot bakgrund av de resultat som kommit fram i undersökningen i uppsatsen skulle det vara intressant att fortsätta forskningen inom området utrikespolitisk analys i två olika inriktningar.

Den första, mer begränsade forskningsuppgiften skulle vara att komplettera denna uppsats med en empirisk undersökning om hur svenska regeringens utrikespolitiska beslut om att skicka svenska militära trupper till Afghanistan – men inte till Irak – kan förklaras. I bägge fallen rör det sig om utrikespolitiska beslut som fattats av en neutral stat som inte är en stormakt, men i inget av fallen rör det sig om externa hot mot nationella intressen.

Den andra, mer omfattande forskningsuppgiften skulle vara att göra en mer fördjupad undersökning om hur utrikespolitiska beslut fattas.
