Genom att bredda och öka blivande samt nuvarande sjuksköterskors kunskaper om delirium och dess konsekvenser och genom att implementera ett systematiskt arbetssätt kring delirium skulle det sannolikt påverka förekomsten och durationen av tillståndet. Detta i sin tur skulle kunna påverka vårdtider positivt och därmed även vårdkostnader (Zaubler, Murphy, Rizzuto, Santos, Skotzko, Giordani, Busdami & Inouye 2013, ss. 222-223). Genom att införa ett interventionsprogram på en medicinavdelning i syfte att förebygga delirium reducerades antalet episoder med delirium hos patienter signifikant. Totalt antal dagar med delirium hos patienter minskades också, vilket ledde till kortare vårdtider med en signifikant kostnadsbesparing (ibid.). Interventionsprogram i
förebyggande syfte mot delirium har även visats vara framgångsrika i andra studier gällande reduktion av vårdkostnader och vårdtider (Akunne, Davis, Westby & Young 2013, s. 193; Leslie & Inouye 2011, ss. 241-242; Lee & Kim 2014, s. 4). Om
sjukvårdens kostnader kan reduceras kan också de samhällsekonomiska kostnaderna minska. Ett preventivt arbete som reducerar förekomsten av delirium kan
förhoppningsvis också minska lidandet både hos patienter men också hos de anhöriga som många gånger drabbas. I det stora hela kan det antas att ett preventivt arbete skulle kunna gynna både på individ- och samhällsnivå.
