Den betydelse som resultaten från denna avhandling har för gerontologins kunskapsområde beror på om tvillingar ses som en speciell grupp eller som icke-tvillingar, med den skillnaden att tvillingar är två individer födda samtidigt. Det troliga är väl att tvillingar är både och, dvs. speciella, åtminstone biologiskt-genetiskt och socialt, men inte mer speciella än att studier av tvillingars sociala liv också är tillämpbara på icke-tvillingar. Att äldre tvillingar talar om betydelsen av nära relationer i ålderdomen är kanske inte så svårt att förstå med tanke på den slags relation de har haft med sin tvilling under ett långt liv. Det intressanta däremot är se på de aspekter som gör relationen till en närande eller god relation, istället för enbart problematisk. I de positiva tvillingrelationerna som beskrivs här nämndes betydelsen av kommunikation, konfliktlösning och rollfördelning, vilka är aspekter som är betydelsefulla i alla mänskliga relationer. Fler studier kunde tillföra mer kunskap om de positiva relationerna med avseende på att identifiera flera aspekter som konstituerar den goda relationen. I kontexten hälsa och livskvalitet hos äldre skulle sociala relationers betydelse också kunna studeras.

Har då avhandlingen tillfört ny eller komplementär kunskap om de tvillingar som ingår i SATSA- och Genderstudierna. Ja, livsberättelserna ger mer kunskap om den kontext som tvillingarna har vuxit upp i och framför allt om de sociala relationerna. Nu rörde sig dessa tvillingars berättelser mycket om de allra närmaste relationerna i sina liv, men ytterligare studier skulle kunna inkludera flera olika typer av relationer som ingår i en tvillings sociala nätverk. Här talar den sociala nätverksteorin om relationer som är tillskrivna och relationer som väljs, ytligare relationer och nära relationer (Pernice-Duca, 2008; Song, 2011; Stern & Fullerton, 2009).

Longitudinella kvalitativa tvillingstudier skulle öka kunskapen om tvillingars sociala liv och livsvillkor och tillföra en detaljrikedom och kunskaper om förändring över tid.

Liknande livsberättelsestudier med yngre åldergrupper skulle öka kunskapen om hur unga tvillingar idag resonerar om sitt tvillingskap.

Vidare skulle flera kvalitativa studier av tvillingar kunna bidra till kvalitativ metodutveckling av tvillingstudier, då tvillingstudier idag är nästan uteslutande kvantitativa.

För vem eller vilka har den här kunskapen betydelse? Svaret är nog att eftersom det föds fler tvillingar idag så är den här kunskapen viktig för de flesta som har ett intresse av eller har med tvillingar att göra, t.ex. för blivande tvillingföräldrar, lärare, vårdpersonal, äktenskapspartners, släkt och vänner, tvillingforskare och inte minst media.
