Abstract

The geopolitical competition for oil.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the U.S. and China in striving for their access to oil cause a risk of serious conflict between the two states. By surveying the world’s production and consumption of oil between 2000 and 2004 this gives us a picture of the large oil production areas and also shows that the world has become more dependent of oil. Together with how the world’s oil reserves are distributed gives a clear picture of the strategic importance of the Middle East.

By mapping the U.S. and Chinas own production, consumption and reserves this gives a view of their dependence of oil imported both today and in the future. Everything points towards that the U.S. and China are going to be heavily dependent on imported oil from the Middle East.

This empirical survey shows a great difference in states’ performances within the political, economical and military sector, which also is revealed in the analysis. In the final analysis is it possible to predict four future areas where there is severe risk of conflict between the U.S. and China. The first area affects the aggressive Chinese oil strategy. The second area affects the Chinese cooperation with the “rogue state” Iran, and the alliances that are being shaped between the two states. The third area that has been identified is China’s striving for political influence in the Middle East and the fourth is the Chinese maritime build-up, where China is tying to form a blue-water navy so that they can protect their own oil shipments from the Middle East. It is important to point out that China isn’t responsible for all of what is taking place it’s more a collision between two different motives: China that wants a prominent political position and the U.S. that wants to maintain its dominant position.
