Föreliggande studie har undersökt fysiska aktivitetsvanor och psykisk hälsa hos 118 individer i åldrarna 18-19 år fördelade på nio skolklasser inom olika utbildningsprogram på tre gymnasieskolor i Växjö. Syftet med studien var att undersöka relationen mellan karaktären och mängden av utövad fysisk aktivitet och självupplevd psykisk hälsa hos urvalsgruppen.
Studien bygger på en enkätundersökning där två validerade enkäter om fysiska aktivitetsvanor respektive psykisk hälsa har använts i kombination med ett antal, av undersökningsledarna, egenformulerade tilläggsfrågor som berör karaktären av utförd fysisk aktivitet samt biologiskt kön och boendeplats.
Insamlad data har bearbetats i statistikprogramet Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) (version 21, SPSS Inc.Chicago, IL, USA).
Resultatet av föreliggande studie visade inga signifikanta samband mellan karaktären eller mängden av utförd fysisk aktivitet och psykisk hälsa hos urvalsgruppen. Vissa tendenser kunde dock skönjas och signifikanta värden kunde konstateras mellan andra variabler än de som frågeställningarna omfattade. Bland annat kunde könsskillnader i fråga om psykisk hälsa och fysisk aktivering inom föreningsbunden idrott samt skillnader mellan elever som studerar utbildningsprogram med idrottsprofil respektive utan idrottsprofil vad gäller mängd veckovis högintensiv fysisk aktivering, konstateras.
Resultatet av föreliggande studie diskuteras och analyseras utifrån tidigare forskning inom området samt utifrån Bourdieus teori om habitus.
