Denna studie har identifierat sju olika funktioner hos fem typer av emotikoner i svenska twitterinlägg. Det har framkommit att emotikonernas främsta funktion är att visa känslor till textens innehåll eller för att representera användarens känslor i samband med att denne kommunicerar något, samt i mindre grad även för att signalera intensiteten hos en känsla eller attityd som redan är uppenbar genom enbart texten. Utöver de rent känslomarkerande funktionerna kan emotikoner även användas för att uttrycka humor och ironi, samt förstärka eller mildra den illokuta styrkan hos talhandlingar som riktas till mottagaren eller avsändaren själv. Studien bidrar till den relativt begränsade mängd forskning om emotikoner ur ett pragmatiskt perspektiv, och illustrerar hur emotikonernas kommunikativa funktioner kan identifieras med utgångspunkt i talaktsteori och artighetsteori. En viss typ av emotikon utgör

inte enbart en funktion, utan kan fylla olika syften, vilket blir uppenbart när emotikonen betraktas i sitt sammanhang och relateras till texten där den förekommer.
