Patienter som överlevt ett hjärtstopp behöver följas upp. Detta då det visat sig att patienter efter ett hjärtstopp kan ha kvarstående symtom och behov även efter att de blivit utskrivna.
Om sjuksköterskor är mer medvetna och uppmärksamma på dessa behov kan de enklare upptäckas redan på sjukhuset vilket gör att åtgärder kan sättas in tidigt samt kan underlätta för att förbereda patient och anhöriga inför hemgång.
En uppföljning skulle kunna göras av specialistutbildade sjuksköterskor inom till exempel primärvården men även av mottagningssjuksköterskor på en hjärtavdelning på det sjukhus där patienten varit inneliggande.
Detta bör göras för att kunna sätta in stöd och åtgärder där det behövs och för att upptäcka olika problem som patient och anhöriga brottas med. Dessa åtgärder kan till exempel vara samtalsstöd, ytterligare information, utökad hemhjälp, gruppträffar med mera.
