Det övergripande syftet med studien är att identifiera faktorer som påverkar inflödet av FDI till länderna i Sydamerika. Den huvudsakliga frågeställningen avser huruvida graden av ekonomisk frihet i regionen har en positiv effekt på nettoinflödet. Av resultatet och den efterföljande diskussionen framgår att det är svårt att dra några säkra slutsatser om sambandet mellan Heritage Foundations frihetsindex och direktinvesteringar. Om studien hade genomförts med hänsyn till olika sektorer och under en längre tidsperiod, finns det skäl att tro att teknikintensivt och exploaterande FDI hade fördelat sig efter hur fria och utvecklade ekonomierna är. Det är också värt att fundera vidare på det ömsesidiga förhållandet mellan utländska direktinvesteringar och den förda ekonomiska politiken. Ett land som implementerar en politik som främjar ett gott investeringsklimat kan tillgodogöra sig mer utländska investeringar. Det gäller i synnerhet sektorer där möjligheter till positiva spillover-effekter i form av tekniköverföring, ökat humankapital, infrastruktur och ledningskompetens är störst. Det kan i sin tur ge förstärkande effekter, med ytterligare potential att öka landets attraktionskraft för framtida investeringar.
