BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dr. Philip L. White

Dr. Philip L. White is Director of the Department of Foods and Nutrition of the American Medical Association and Secretary of the Council on Foods and Nutrition. He joined the AMA staff in 1956.

Dr. White received a Bachelor of Science degree at Pennsylvania State University, Master of Science degree at Iowa State University, and Doctor of Science degree at Harvard University in the School of Public Health.

He has had extensive experience in nutrition overseas, having

worked four years in Peru with the U.S. Agency for International Development. Re assisted with a nutrition survey in Iran in 1956 and again in Peru in 1959. Dr. White has served in a consultant capacity with a number of U.S. governmental agencies and food trade associations. He was a panel chairman of the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health, 1969. He is the founder and organizer of the Western Hemisphere Nutrition Congresses that are held every three years.

His memberships include: American Medical Association, American Board of Nutrition, American Society for Clinical Nutrition, American

Institute of Nutrition, American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is president-elect of the Society for Nutrition Education.

Dr. White edits a monthly column, "Smart Eating," published in TODAY'S HEALTH, the American Medical Association publication for the American family.

He has more than 70 publications to his credit and has been the senior editor of a dozen scientific books. His most recent popular book, "Let's Talk About Food," written with Nancy Selvey, was released in October, 1974.

He has two children. His wife, Dr. Hilda Sarver White, is a former associate professor of the Department of Home Economics of Northwestern University. She is now a lecturer in nutrition for Northern Illinois University.
