ABSTRACT
Background
The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a correlation between vertical facial dimensions and the proportions of the alveolar bone. Focus was also on morphological differences between genders. Further knowledge on these questions could be helpful during treatment planning before implant installation since the height and width of the alveolar bone is of importance.
Material and Method
Measurements were performed, bilaterally and anteriorly in the maxilla, on CBCT images of the alveolar bone on 180 patients. The patients were divided into three groups based on craniofacial height (low-, normal- and high angle) and subdivided into males and females. Subsequently height and width of the alveolar bone were measured on all patients.
Results
Significant differences were found concerning the height of the alveolar bone and the width at 9 and 12 mm, especially between low/normal and low/high facial types. However the results varies between the left and right side. There is a significant difference between genders concerning the dimensions of the alveolar bone.
Conclusion
There is a statistical significant difference between vertical facial dimensions and the dimensions of the alveolar bone. High angle subjects have a greater alveolar bone height in comparison with normal- and low angle subjects. The low angle subjects presented a wider alveolar crest compared to the high angle group. Males presented a greater alveolar height and width compared to women. This knowledge could be of help in treatment planning. However research on clinical implementation of the results would be of interest.

SAMMANFATTNING
Bakgrund
