PRESS RELEASE DECEMBER 22, 1965

FOR INMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM: COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

BEEKEEPERS MEET

The Colorado Beekeepers Association, holding their annual winter meeting at the Auditorium Hotel In Denver, grappled with their old problem of

Insecticide spraying, which downs the bees. New officers to guide

c.B.A.

business for another year are L. D. Toyne, Sedgwick, president; John

Haefel i , Monte Vista, vice president; and Vernon Culhane, Durango, secretary-treasurer. The problem of protecting honey bee pol I inators to assure good seed set, leading to an ample yield of human food each year, becomes

increas-ingly acute as Intensive agriculture becomes more ond more dependent on controlled pol I ination.

Beekeepers present at the December 13 and 14 meeting represented all areas of the state, as wet I as the neighboring states of Nebraska and New Mexico. Several national figures in the industry were present. To pursue solutions

to beekeeper problems on a national scale, delegates were elected to attend the American Beekeeping Federation meeting ot Chattanooga, Tennessee,

January 24 to 28, 1966, and it was decided to sponsor Colorado Honey Queen Pat Davis, Durango, in the competition for American Honey Queen in 1966. A Honey Queen 11knows her bees" and helps promote honey sales wherever she

goes. Delegates who wil I accompany the queen wll I be Vernon Culhane, Durango, and John Haefel I, Monte Vista.

Program speakers included Dr. L.B. Daniels, Colorado State University, who discussed with enthusiasm the outlook for biological pest control;

who talked about marketing problems; and Pat Powers, State Apiary Inspector, who discussed apiary inspection results.

The convention resolved to ask that their state be represented at the forthcoming meeting of the Apiary Inspectors of America, and in other action organized a cornnittee to· look Into the re-establ lshment of a marketing order through the State Department of Agriculture. State Agriculture Corrmissioner John P, Orcutt del lvered the welcoming address, and fol lowing a talk on weed control in the apiary by Kent Hedges,

u.

S, Borax Company, the formal session closed with a comprehensive treatment of the matter of honeyhouse sanitation, This sanitation program the beekeepers are quick to describe

"self-Imposed" within ·their industry, thus averting any need of federal

control of their product or processing places. It was the consensus that the future for honey is as healthful as honey is for the consumer •

-NOTICE TO THE ASSEMBLY

To all those present let it be known that the Board of

Directors of the Colorado Beekeepers Association passed the following resolution:

Be it resolved;

That we Beekeepers of the Colorado Beekeepers Association appreciate the work that Helen Jones has done in our behalf these past 8 years.

That Helen has collected and counted our moneys, recorded our proceedings, attended to our correspondence, counseled our members and attended many other things of importance. That without her help we Beekeepers would have been adrift upon the great Arkansas River without a paddle.

We also recognize that kind words are appreciated, but a more tangible expression of appreciation is more enduring.

Therefore we herewith bestow upon Helen a token of our appreciation.

(13)

The Colorado Beekeepers Association is an organization in which commerical and hobbist beekeepers both are eli~able to join.

The association holds two meetin~s a year. One in the sW11mer at the Shavano Manor in Salida, Colorado. It is a short

business meeti~ and a luncheon. The meetin~ is held on the last Saturday in June, The 1983 meetin~ will be held on JURe 25th, The winter meeti~ is held in Golden, Col~. the first weekend in December, At this meetint, on Saturday the Assc, invites ~uest speakers to lecture on a varity of subject. pretaining to beekeepin~. I am enclosing a copy of the 1981 &

1982 schedule of the winter meetin~s so you can see the type of speakers we have had at these meetings. Several manufactures of bee supplies have displays of their products at these

meetings also, On Sunday a short business meeting of the Assc. members is held.

The Colorado Beekeepers Association also has an Advisory

Committe which meets with the Colorado Department of A~riculture to discuss the Bee Law and any chan~es that need to be made in the law, The coffiJllitte then submites any imformation needed to be passed Qn to the beekeepers to a news letter (called The Bee Notes) which is mailed quarterly to all the members of the assc •

The dues for the Colo. Beekeepers Assc, are $10.00 for anyone havin~ less than 100 colonies (hives) of bees. For anyone who has more than 100 colonies the dues are $10.00 plus

05

cents per colony thereafter.

tear at perforated line

Don't forget to medicate your bees with terramycin

in

patty form or in powdered

sugar.

Alfalfa

honey was

close

to water-white,

probably because

the drought eliminRted

There was

some but not much clover honey this year. All in all a great year!
